I just replaced the fuel pump on my 92 and it started wonderfully with no hesitation and all seemed well. But then i get a code 179, which I think is a lean condition, and when I start to accelerate from a stop it seems like there is no fuel and it bucks like a horse and the thing feels like it wants to die out. This only happens when accelerating under 20 mph. When i drove it on the highway at 70 for about 80 miles it had no problem just when i would come to a complete stop and then accelerate. Its just for a split second and then it accelerates normally with no problem. I tried searching and it seems to be a weird problem that many have not encountered. It also seems to happen after the cel goes on. With the research I did about the code 179 it seems to be either the FPR or the mass air flow sensor. I would like to find the correct problem as replacing parts can get pretty expensive quick. I would appreciate anybodys input on this situation. Thanks

I would be inclined to ask, why did you replace the fuel pump. did you also replace the filter? All your connections are good?

Good questions, always replace the filter when replacing the pump.

My code list says 179 is set when the O2 sensor indicates a rich condition. It could be triggered by a bad FPR, or a bad MAF, or anything else that could cause the engine to run rich.

From other indications, is the engine running rich, or is it actually running lean?

Do you get a 173 (or other rich code) from the KOER test? Sometimes these are easier to diagnose from the KOER test because KOER codes represent "here and now" codes.

Check the vacuum line to the FPR for gasoline and check fuel pressure.

I replaced the fuel pump because it was totally dead and when i would try and start it no sound from the pump after ignition and it would just crank and crank and it left my stranded on the side of the road which i had to get a tow. Now with the new fuel pump no such problem and yes i did put a new filter and everything seems to be connected. I think it is running lean because I pulled the plugs and all indicated a good spark except the #6 plug ( the one closest to the passenger which I think is #6) and it was totally white. I should tell you that before I replaced the pump I would randomly get codes 186 and 187 which I think has to do with the MAF. I will do the KOER test tonight and see what pops up. Thanks for all the help
