Replacement rear diff cover

Anyone know of a standard steel cover, maybe from another make/model that can replace the standard plastic one on a '92 Navajo?

The main aim of this is to be able to drill and tap drain holes in it somewhere a bit more accessible than the stock ones and offer a bit more shatter-proofing when off-road.

Any 8.8 dif cover should fit. There are steel chrome ones available for around $30 or you could go with a Ford Motorsport, Summit Racing or Trick Flow aluminum cover. They will run $150-175.

Thanks for the reply Dan but you overestimate my knowledge of other vehicles. I have no idea what the same or similar rear diff was used on.

What I meant was, when I next go to the local junkyard which vehicles should I start looking under to get one of these metal covers?

The state the "Great White" is usually in I won't be spending anything like what suppliers want for a nice shiny chrome or aluminium one.

8.8 rears can be found in Explorers, Rangers, Mustangs

All Explorers are 8.8.
Most but not all Mustangs are 8.8.
F150's, E150's and FS Broncos used the 8.8 for many years.
Rangers are made with 7.5's and 8.8's. The larger axle is more common with 4.0L and/or 4WD trucks.


Both the 7.5 and 8.8 use 10 bolt covers but each has a distinctive shape. You can print these pictures to take to the yard so you can tell the difference.

you can also use an IRS diff cover from a 3rd gen for a decent strength upgrade.

My (early build) `91 has a Plastic Diff cover, where as my (early build) `92 and my (late build) `93 has Steel covers.

The Plastic Covers were found on the Early Explorer/Navajo....just find another Newer Explorer, and you should be fine.

I just don't understand why they don't have a drain plug.

I'd buy one if they did.

You need to break the seal anyway-a drain hole won't get it all out.

All you really need is a fill. I'm good with this.

This is what kills me. The wife's 'Zuki has a drain plug on the bottom of the diff housing.
