Alrighty, my shocks are 5 years old (OEM). What is a good, non-Ford shock to replace the stock ones with, and what is the approx. price. Thanks in advance.

Edelbrock IAS, $69. The OME Nitro Chargers are considered better, but look to pay a lot more money for them! Look for Edelbrock to come out with a new IAS shock for 2001. I am in the same situation you are, still have the shocks my truck came with! I think I am going to go with the Edelbrocks.

I'll wait for the Edelbrocks. Any approx. date of release on them?

I have the Moroe Reflex Truck shocks, about $50 ea.

Installed them when I did the torsion/shackle thing. I've had them for about 6 months and so far they have been great. Done a lot of serious wheeling with them too and they still have a great ride.

I forgot to add, will these shocks at least help the rear butt sag that the Explorer experiences when carrying anything of light-moderate weight in the cargo area? Thanks again guys.

No, only stronger leaf springs will help that. An add-a-leaf kit will fix that problem cheap, about $30.

I'm willing to spend a decent amount, but not an extravagant amount. Anything between $50-$100 per shock, but less money is always a nice treat. As for add a leaf, what company would you recommend for that?

I bought my add-a-leafs from Dead Link Removed, Explorer Pro Comp makes them. The part number is EXP-13120 and they are about $30 for a pair. Easy to install too, it takes about an hour each side.

P.S. You may need to do a slight torsion twist to even it out, but you'll see when you install them if it needs it.

I'm not incredibly familiar with torsion twisting. Do you do it as the song plays? :) In reality, does this require additional parts or special tools or will a Craftsman tool chest most likely have what's needed? I do have a lot, lot, lot of wrenches, ratchet sets, etc.

Just need a socket set and a jack. It's super easy, righty heighty, lefty lowery. Dead Link Removed

So basically take my level, place it on the rear roof of the Explorer, and tighten/loosen till I get a perfect level reading?

LOL

No, no, no.....just do it buy looking at the truck and adjusting it to your liking.

I apologize for sounding dumb, but with this I am. Does the torsion do the amount of lift on the rear or control the sideways angle, such as - // car leans right \\ leans left and || is perfectly level?

You're not dumb and I wasn't laughing AT you. The torsion bar is the replacement for the pre 95 coil spring suspension. There is one bar on each side of the front suspension. Tomorrow take a look under your truck and you'll see a bar about 4 feet long running from the bottom 'A' arm straight back. At the end there is a bracket and if you lie directly under it you'll see a bolt in the middle of the opening in the bracket. You tighten that to raise the front end. Do the same amount of turns for each side. These bars are only in the front and you only have two.

Thank ya!

Ah, I wasn't saying you called me dumb, I was just admitting that to myself I seem it.:) As for the torsion bars, I understand, I've seen them a lot actually when my left ball joint went and had it on the ramps. I was a little curious as to their function, but it makes more sense now. Thanks for the help, I think I'll call for the add-a-leaf kit tomorrow and then the shocks when they're released.

great inexpensive shocks!!!!

I bought my Monroe Reflex shocks when they did a buy 3 get one free (ended up paying 29.99 before tax) at O'reilly Auto parts. They are awesome shocks for the price, and a great ride too. I was told by my dad's fishing buddy that Monroe shocks were the same as Rancho (not sure if this is true) but I was considering both of them at the time and decided to go with the less expensive deal. Best choice I've made with my truck yet. My 2 cents...go with Monroe Reflex...best choice for the bucks!

2001,

I forgot to ask, the Explorer Pro Comp Add-A-Lead Kit, are they full length leaf springs included?

No, they are not full length. They are about 24".

2001,

Does the shorter length make for a rougher/choppier ride? I heard that full lengths provide better ride than the smaller ones. How does yours ride? I hate to have to go to a suspension shop to have them put a full size one on if I don't need it.

I have never used the log leaf so I can't really compair fairly, but the ride is harsher because you will be stiffening the ride. I do know that longer leafs will be better in the long run for your leaf pack life.
