On a scale from 1-10, how hard isit to replace this bad boy?
I plan on taking it to a mechanic to have the system recharged by a pro.

What tools will I need?

Thanks,

Jeremy

never did the explorer

I have not looked real close but it is probably fairly easy. It sits up top, so I figure no problem. The lines are probably held on with one boltin the back. Someone told me that there is nylon washers in the compressor and if the washers go bad, they get into the condensor, which would then need to be replaced.

There is more to the job than just unbolting the old one and installing the new. If the compressor failed it had spread metal shavings and other peices of crap all through the system. You will need to remove the compressor, flush out all the lines, condensor and evaporator. Then you will need to replace the fixed orifus tube and the reciever/dryer as they will be full of trash and can not be cleaned. The new compressor and reciever/dryer will need to be filled with the proper amount of the proper oil before being reinstalled and every o-ring should be replaced. Only then can you install the new compressor and take it to a shop to have it evacuated and recharged.

I would say a 2-3 on the 1-10 scale but take your time like with anything. The guy above me sounds like he knows a lot more about cars than me being a technician and eveything though ha.
