A/c Compressor help

I have a 1994 XL 4x4 explorer and the a/c compressor appears to have gone bad. the A/C system has been without coolant for years.

What is my least expensive and least problematic course of action with this?

Do you need it to function again? I guess that's a funny question, but it could get involved, particularly if it is still R-12 based.

No the a/c at present doesn't blow cold.

No. Couldn't I just get a non a/c belt and bypass the a/c compressor?

Yes, you can. You can then remove everything related to the A/C and get some room under the hood.
