I am sure there is a thread on this, but I'm a first time poster. The factory JBL 6" is blown and I want to replace it, probably with another 6.5". I tried pulling it out but I started to snap the fastners (why did Ford do it like this?). Could someone direct me or provide me instructions on how to remove the speaker and replace it. Also, is it possible to put an eight inch in the same housing without major modifications?

Dude, that is a great question. I was wondering about replacing my stock sub set up as well. Looking for a plug and play system on the cheap.

I found this on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=38647&item=7933011250&rd=1

But have no idea if it is crap or not. If anyone knows about this and could let me know if this is worth while or looks like a can o' worms let me know.

I hope I didn't just Jack your Thread, but I think this is on the same lines. If not let me know and I will delete the post.

Thanks,
S.

you have to remove that whole back panel. get a different box, because the factory one sucks. you could get an MTX, but it gets really expensive, and is un-necesary if you just want to replace the sub and leave the rest of the set-up stock.

I just sold my MTX thunderform box for $200 Canadian on this forum about 5 months ago. I never did like it, plastic flexes=poor sound quality. Save some money and get better sound with a wooden box! Believe me, it is worth loosing a little cargo room over.

Hmm, really? Poor sound quality compared to what? I use every inch of cargo room I have. I like the MTX because it has a built in amp and won't have to get one seperately.

Poor sound quality compared to the quality you will get from a box made from MDF wood. With wood, there will be less flexing of the box's walls, fewer rattles, etc. The MTX thunderform box is advantageous in that it gives "some bass", but mostly it saves room. You just have to decide what is more important to you. Either an MTX box that gives you alright sound but all your cargo area, or a small wooden box that will take some cargo area, but increase both your sound quality AND the size of your wallet. You could even build your own small, (some subs only needing 0.6 cubic feet) box, which would save moocho money in comparison to the plastic MTX. Just an opinion, tak it or leave it

The MTX box is okay, but if you already have the stock sub, the MTX is meant as an insert to the pocket of trucks that do not have the JBL premium sound system. No biggie though, they fit just fine if you take the stock 6.5" out and put the 4ch. amp on a sheet of MDF and take out the whole assembly behind the panel in the back. Only thing that pisses me off is no other sub seems to want to fit into the MTX box. Save other MTX or crappier subs. I wish the JBL 1200 would fit in there, then i'd be happy. :)

I put a 10 in that hole.I also put my big pioneer amp on the factory amp rack hidden away. Then I finished it off with checkerplate and a chrome flame sub cover. It is the coolest looking install I have seen. Wanna see pics?

Picks would be AWESOME!

Can you send them to gosox78@yahoo.com ?

Was this close to the price of the MTX set up?

Thanks,
S.

I'll send some tonite after work (9;30) gotta run right now.And I don't know what the MTX costs. I just had a box getting in the way of my bikes coming in and out, so I made the 10 fit in the factory hole, re did the amp rack to fit my big amp and then filled the rest of the hole wtth checkerplate.

An " factory " sub can sound ok if you know how to tune it. I'm not saying great or real load but ok. I say this because I have the JBL system in my 91. All I did was replace the head unit with an Pioneer DEH-6200 from my 79 Mini. ( I was upgraiding for more bling + controls ). I goes great. Not going to win any soundoffs or anything but I'd be guessing in the 120's any way. I'll test it another day. Tune it you'l be surprised on what can happen. I was! My history goes in the SQ on sound systems, not the DB side. An 10 would be much better.

Am I reading this right?? Can you put a 10" speaker in the factory sub? If not, how big can you get to fit in there? I really dont want to buy a new amp. Just upgrade the speaker.
Day later...I just pulled off the grill and it seems you have to remove the enclosure from the veh. to remove the speaker and then only the same size is gonna fit unless you cut up the enclosure.
