Im wondering if you can just replace the glass part on the power mirrors?

my 94 X has a broken mirror on the passenger side, everything is in tact and the power is still working...but i just need the glass....

any ideas? Id rather not pay 100+ for a whole new mirror

thanks

I want to hear about fixing this too to fix my brother's mirror. Ford Probe for his though, think they should be somewhat similar.

yeah i mean where the glass goes is just 4 holes. 2 are just clips the other 2 are what spins and makes the mirror move. It should just pop in.

Have you guys thought about going to a junk yard and replacing it? Gary

Since it's my brother's car I haven't put too much thought into replacing it, but since it was asked I thought I might pick up some info too.

yeah, but its too damn cold here in NJ to be rummaging around a Junkyard at this point..lol

Go to a glass shop (windshields ect) and they can get all side mirror glass. Just break out the old glass and glue the new one on. They come w/adhesive pads although I use Goop. Appx. $15.

from my 96 ford CD:

Glass, Outside Mirror, Explorer

Removal

1. Push in on the bottom of the outside rear view mirror glass until it stops.

2. Protect the mirror body with a rag or similar material at the top and insert a flat blade screwdriver between the mirror body and outside rear view mirror glass.

3. Pry on the outside rear view mirror glass until it snaps loose from outside rear view mirror motor assembly. On Explorer Limited, disconnect the heater wires from the outside rear view mirror glass.

4. Remove the screwdriver and continue to pull the outside rear view mirror glass by hand until it is completely unsnapped from the outside rear view mirror motor assembly.

Installation

1. Make sure the rubber gasket on the outside rear view mirror motor is properly installed on the outside rear view mirror motor assembly.

2. Position the outside rear view mirror glass assembly in the mirror and move glass around until it drops into place.

3. Push on the center of the outside rear view mirror glass to snap it in place.

4. Check outside rear view mirror glass for looseness. If loose, push on glass until it is fully seated.

thanks..i don't want to glue one on, its a power mirror. It just snaps in.

I just need to find the damn piece..lol.

Im thinking junkyard is the best bet. I popped a mirror out of a 91 limited X that i just bought, but of course it was a different setup and couldnt use it.

I have taken Explorer mirrors apart a few times to put in the mirror turnsignals on my 96X & 98 Mtner.
Believe me you dont want to take the mirror backing out of the mirror assy as described above. Its a ***** to get it back in correctly and very easy to break the glass putting it back in.
The mirror, the glass itself, does not snap in.
It is glued to the mirror backing at the factory.
When you replace the glass you remove the broken glass and glue the new glass back on the mirror backing.
Dont make it more difficult than you have to.

It didn't glue into mine (94)...I will take a pic and post it. I have a ford factory CD that shows how to pop out the glass part, but the actual mirrors I have are not the same.

It says you are supposed to push the mirror down all the way then just pry it out..exactly how it was described above.

It seems it would be much harder to take the door panel off and what not....Im new at this, so the little removal of things I have to do the better....

My luck I will have the door panel off then break something..

ok i thought about what you said..it (the glass) is glued to the backing, but the backing just snaps in...I will post the pics..
