I talked to a Ford service advisor today, and he said one of the reasons my car may be pinging is that it has a blown intake gasket, thus allowing oil into the combustion chamber. I have noticed my car using oil, and has a very bad ping problem, especially on the highway, where it pings under any throttle pressure. How would I tell if my car is getting oil into the combustion chamber? Also does anyone think this is worth a try?

re: intake gasket.
I had the exact same problems with my X, ping and oil consumption (leak). Re-torquing the lower intake manifold cured my problem. Pull #5 spark plug and check for deposits. Compare with another, maybe #2. Let us know what you find.

Ill check the plugs. Can I re-torque the bolts with everything attached? Or do I need to remove some things to get access to the bolts. If I do need to remove something can you tell me what it or they are? Thanks

Intake Gasket

The upper intake manifold has to be removed in order to torque the lower. It will take a couple of hours to do, but not really a difficult job. You will need basic hand tools, shallow and deep metric sockets and an inch # & ft. # torque wrenchs.
Before you go too far, check that plug for deposits. If this appears to be the problem, send me mail and I will walk you through it.
The only part needed will be an upper manifold gasket. (from Ford). A Hayes or Chilton's manual will also be a big help.

Hope this info is of help.
