How easy/hard is it to install an EPC solenoid on a 1996 4x4.

Does it involve dropping the tranny or removing the exhaust at all?

You will have to drop the tranny pan. Not sure on the 96 but on my 99 (5R55E) the exhaust was in the way from totally removing the pan. I found another post that suggest to drop the front drive shaft instead. This worked great, just have to bend the vent pipe some to get the pan out.

Once the pan is down you will have to remove the electrical plug from the solenoid. I might be a good idea to replace the solenoid bracket while you are replacing the epc solenoid.

Remember to only take out the gold colored bracket screw and torque it back to 53-71 lb-in when done.

Also, it would be a good idea to re-torque in sequence all the valve body bolts (71-97 lb-in) since you have the pan down.

I bought the revised bracket and will replace the EPC this weekend. It appears that the bracket (xl2z-7l491-aa) has 3 bolts that hold it down. The bracket has 3 nothches in it. Is this the case? Also, based on the picture it looks like the bracket interlocks with that plunger next to the EPC. Can someone shed some light on the bracket install. I don't want to goof it up.

It looks like its more than just removing the gold colored screw. Thanks for your help.

Changing the bracket is a piece of Cake. Taking off the pan is 95% od the work. The bracket is just a few bolts to remove. The solonoids will stay in place, when you change out the bracket. After you change it check to see if the solonoids have movement in and out. If they do, just bend the tabs on the bracket to snug them up.
