The time has come to replace my Pioneer 6 CD changer unit on my '02 Sport Trac. The stereo plays fine but the CD is giving me difficulties IE tells me "no CD" when one is in there, refuses to eject CD give a "CD error" etc. eventually it give me back the CD but it's annoying.
That said, I want to replace it and I wanted to get suggestions from the forum.

Here is the criteria:

1. Don't care if it has a multiple CD changer (single CD is fine).
2. I'm happy with the OEM unit sound & power so I don't need 300w per channel.
3. I want to keep all the other OEM speakers, amps & sub.
4. I want the LEDs to match the green dash.
5. I would prefer a single DIN with a pocket spacer (I could use the space).

I assume you can get wiring adapters for any system to be plug & play, so what would be the best aftermarket replacement make & model?

crutchfield.com is a good place to start evaluating your options.

If you don't need any additional features (iPod/mp3 player control, usb inputs, bluetooth, etc), you can just go with the least expensive Pioneer unit that has all-green illumination and the proper number of audio pre-outs you may require for the amp/amps depending on the adapter or output/input configuration needed.

If you just want a CD player, and need no mp3 capability whatsoever, and one set of preouts is fine, the DEH-11E ($80-90) is a deal.

If you want to play mp3's on CDs, step up one model to the DEH-1100MP ($99-110).

Want iPod control? Spring for the 2100IB ($120-130).

The DEH-P3100UB has mp3 capability, iPod control, USB input, optional Bluetooth, is HD and Sat-Radio ready, AND has 2 sets of preamp outputs. Not bad for $150-160.

You can often find sales and deals and get most or any of these models at an even better price, especially online. You may also want to search places like Crutchfield.com as mentioned, other brands may have a look or interface you prefer over a Pioneer.

Since I'm replacing then MP3 & Ipod hookup would be nice (good for resale) Other than the color of the LEDs the biggest issue will be hookup to the OEM Sub woofer & amp. I saw their are some wiring kits to plug into the existing plugs. Do they cover all the connections?

Not all wiring kits cover all the connections. The scosche and metra ones that walmart and most car audio shops sell sometimes only give one choice for how you adapt the aftermarket stereo to the factory amps.

They DO of course make connectors for ALL the options, using the speaker wires to the amp, the preouts to the amp, etc. etc. You can find them online if you want to buy them seperately, or a stereo shop might have it if you get the part number off the scosche/metra website or another car stereo site.

If you order through Crutchfield, they give you everything you need for free, and you get to choose which adapter you want if there are multiple options. If you change your mind or aren't happy with the adapter you get, you can call them and they'll send you out the others for free. Crutchfield's regular prices aren't spectacular, but sometimes it's worth it for DIY since you get everything for an install for free. If you can find the head unit you want on sale there, I'd say spring for it. They offer free shipping, plus you can always get a coupon online for $20 off. You can get that $160 Pioneer for $140 or less, plus all the stuff you need, and free shipping. Even less if it's on sale.

I never bothered with Crutchfield before, but with the coupon and free shipping, I got a deal on my most recent receiver, the service was great, and I have no complaints.

Be sure to look around at least a little, though. If you know for sure you want a Pioneer, fine. Otherwise it might pay off to check out some other units in case you see something you like even better. Sucks to buy and then find the most awesome one not long after.

good tips above, i also find that Crutchfield has great service. You pay for it but in the long run your less likely to buy the wrong thing, . . been there.

For reference that CD changer can be fixed for about $80 or so. .
