I enjoy reading what you guys do to modify your truck. I am very curious what the result of your modifications are in actual real world performance gains as well as gas milage gains ( or loses ).
Thanks....

Well, here's mine so far!

Superchip-better throttle response noticed immediately, definite power gains, firmer and higher shift points (auto tranny), loss of mileage due to heavy foot!

Borla cat-back-better throttle response, noticable power gains, approx 3-5 mpg increase(again, heavy foot use varies!)

Well, that's all I really have so far!

Here's the order that I put my mods on, and their "gains." All gains are using the seat-of-the-pants method.

1) K&N PIPK: louder engine sound, greater throttle response, 3-5 hp, $100
2) Magnaflow Catback: louder and mellower exhaust note, better throttle response, 5 hp, $200
3) Hypertech chip: Smoother engine, mellower exhaust note, 10-15 hp, better shift points and shifts, great increase in mileage, $200
4) BBK 66mm TB: louder engine sound, much better throttle response, 3-5 hp, slight loss in mileage, $200
5) JBA Headers: louder engine sound, slight loss of low end torque, increase in highway power: 5-10 hp? increase in mileage, $1000+

At this stage, I was getting about 23/28 city/hwy (using premium gas).

6) BBK Instacharger, removal of Hypertech chip: = throttle response as stage 5, power: whoa nelly!, mileage: ~21/24, $3500

In retrospect, the headers didn't do that much and were expensive, but necessary for the blower addition. I wouldn't have done them if I wasn't thinking about the blower. The chip was by far the best investment, but intake and exhaust work are almost necessary also. The TB was a pretty good power gain for the money also.

Alec-on that hypertech chip, you gained gas milage?? Are those worth it, if you have stock exhaust?? Thanks-

K&N Drop in - no noticeable gains, just figure to save $ in the long run.

Bosch Pugs and new Wires - Smoother, quicker starts, cleaner idle (of course that is compared to the 80,000 old plugs that were in).

Removed airbox and "jimmied up" my K&N - $2.50 for clamps, noticed more throaty engine and slight HP increase when accelerating.

Throw in Texaco Fuel and I am getting an extra 30 miles per tank. Can't say which changes did what b/c I did them all within a couple of weeks. If I were to guess, the change to Texaco gave me the best results. I will be able to give a better answer in the summer when they stop selling the "winter gasoline blends".

Yup, the Hypertech really helped mileage. The downside is, you have to use premium gas. I'd say the chip gave me about 5-6 mpg, added when all the other mods (except blower) were on. With stock exhaust, the chip would probably give you 3-4 mpg.

WOW... 28 highway mpg. What is the trick? I have never even heard of asnyone getting this milage in an Explorer. You are to be definately commended.
