Ride Height - Limited

Air Ride puzzle

I have a 95 Limited with stock suspension. There appears to be a slow leak in one or more of the air shocks. My question is; Can I replace the motorcraft air shocks with another brand? Can I replace them myself if I turn the air-ride system off?

Thanks!

Oh dear...

I dont know if its the same on the Explorer's system, but on my old Lincoln Continental I had the air ride system blow a leak, made the whole ass of the car drag the ground. Cost to repair: around $3,000.

I hope the Explorer system is different, but I dont know. The switch is the same to deactivate it so....

im bumping this because i am interested... i want to lift up my 96 limited.. since its only worth 3500 bucks.. *(hahaha)* anyway.. are there aftermarket shocks i can put on my limited... and how can i get the lift i desire *(roughly 3 inches... maybe 4.)*

If you're looking to a 3 to 4 inch lift, ditch the air ride stuff and get a suspension or body lift.

Shocks don't give lift.

I remember reading some news that the 1996 Limiteds with ARC (Automatic Ride Control) was supposed to come with as standard. But, they didn't come with it at all, and it was an option. So, people who ordered were given the $500-600 something back.

So, my understanding is that ONLY the '95 Limiteds came with the ARC standard. Then the '96-'98 come with as an option on four corners and then from '99 to '01, rear leveling is optional only.

ARC was available as an option to Eddie Bauers as well from '95-'98s on four corners and the '99s to '01 as rear leveling only.

This applies only to either 4x4 or AWD models.

As I look at the Limiteds ('95s-'98s), the running boards are identical to the XLTs and same with the rear bumper, except the coloring.

They all use air shocks, not air springs like on Expeditions. The current Explorers does not have air suspension available, but the '03 Expedition will have one on four corners. I hope that it will be available to Explorers in the future.
