I picked up a rear end out of a 1991 Explorer and was told it was 3:73 ratio now I tried the turning wheel watch the drive shaft and it appeared to be a 3:73.

Can someone tell me how to decode the ring gear ? I'm told there's supposed to be two sets of numbers to divide to tell the ratio but these don't make sense to me

Here's what I read
2-3-3 ford E47W PF-1 41 4/ F?

Thanks for the reply . I don't have either one of the door tag or the axle tag these were not with the axle when I purchased it.

If you've eyeballed the gears, you can count the teeth on the ring and pinion then divide them.

Try finding a part# on the gear and see if you can get a Ford parts guy to verify what it is. Other than that all you can do is mark the ring gear, rotate it and count the pinion rotations.

If it's slightly more than 3.5 turns, then it's got to be 3.73.
