Rocker arm bolts

Last night while putting on the rocker arms one of the bolts snapped on me.At 30ft lbs torque!The donor engine is a 95.Luckily when I heard the crack I stopped and backed it out.It came out all in one piece but was at the verge of breaking offThe book calls for 46-52 ft lbs then turn 90 degrees,Starting to seriously think that is wrong....

Anyways my question is do I have to go on a scavenger hunt or can I stop at the local fastenal and get a similar but not exact bolt.The local yards that I use to visit have gotten rid of their ex's because they just don't move parts.

When a bolt torque spec gives a value, then says turn 90 degrees after, that means it is a TTY (Torque To Yield) spec bolt, and that it should only be used once, because it was torqued to it's yield point. Head bolts are another TTY bolt that should only be used once.

As you've discovered, when you try to re-use a TTY bolt, they tend to snap.

You could take one of the old bolts to Fastenal, and see if they have a bolt of the same thread, class, and length, but you might not find it there since they are metric bolts and as good as Fastenal is for some stuff, they don't stock a whole lot of automotive-specific bolts.

You are better off getting them at the Ford dealer or perhaps even asking at auto parts stores. Some bigger Napa stores carry a good selection of fasteners.

When replacing rocker arms, you want to use new rockers and new hardware. You can re-use the rocker shafts, but generally it's a whole lot less expensive to just buy the entire rocker assembly, with new rocker arms, new shafts, new springs, new pins and washers, and new bolts all included, all for less than the price of 12 new rockers.

As far as I've read, those rocker arm bolts are not TTY and do not need an additional 80-85 degree turn. (From the ford service manual)

My bad.You are correct I was thinking head bolt on turning them 90 degrees,But as far as the rocker arm bolt,I went to fastenal they had to order them.I wonder why the such a big difference between the 94 and 95 torque specs.At 94 the book was quoting 24 and the 95 was 46 to 52.

Oh on the plus side because This was the third engine from the yard (Long story)
I had 6 extra bolts laying around.

anyone got a better number?The book is an old chilton's

The bolt type is noted in the shop manual as E800544 but I haven't been able to find the specs that go with it.

Torque specs are 62-70nm or 46-52ft lbs (drive down evenly, torque in stages)
