i have a 2000 mountaineer and in the mornings and only in the morning no matter what temp it is it cranks fine and then it starts to run rough i can give it some gas and it finnally goes away i put lucas gas treatment and fuel injector cleaner in it and nothing helps any help?

clean your Intake Air Control (IAC for short).

search for threads on IAC and it will come up very much.

My Explorer XLT did the exact same thing.

it is on different parts of the engine on different models.

on mine it was on the very top of the engine (the highest part on it), underneath a decorative cover that said SOHC on it.

I agree to check your IAC. My 2000 Explorer 5.0 V8 did the same thing until it warmed up (which I belive is the same engine as yours). I tried cleaning the valve but it actually seemed to make it worse or minimally didn't make a difference at all.

Here's what you do, start the engine, locate the IAC (on the 5.0 it is right on top of the engine) and disconnect the wiring harness to it. If the engine doesn't change it is dead. If it immediately stalls then it is working (at least partially).

I got a new one for $50 online and it takes like 45 seconds to swap out. You can try cleaining, but others have also stated this is a temporary measure at best. For $50 bones it is just as easy to replace it.

Another common thing with our cars is the MAF or MAS (Mass air flow sensor). This is a more expensive part ($250 - $300) so I was happy with cleaning mine.

edit: You can also clean the butterfly with a microfiber cloth and some seafoam spray (not that it will help your issue, but a good idea to do).

I'm glad I saw this. my '97 Mountaineer 5.0 is doing the same thing.

It was really bad bad on Saturday when I started it as it had been sitting a month with out being driven or started.
