I was wondering what the rest of the Explorer's tach at 55 mph. I run about 2000 at 55 and this is high compared to my Blazer which runs about 1400 at 55mph. The overdrive works so its not like I need an extra gear there. Is it because of this all wheel drive system? I have the 4.0 ohv in my 98.

My 1992 4.0 OHV runs at about 1500 at 45mph, 1700 at 55mph and 2000 at 60mph I believe but will double check.

Your RPMs seem about right.

It's all about the gearing and tire size. I have a 1994 XL with 4.0L OHV and 5 speed manual. At 45mph I run 1500 rpm, 55mph I run 1800, and 60mph I run about 2000 rpm. These are pretty acurate, but my speedometer is JUNK above 45mph. I would like to note we have put tires on that are about 4" bigger diameter than the original, and when we had the old tires on the RPMS were slightly higher... Sounds like you are doing fine

take care

George

my dads 97 V8 AWD w/3:73s runs 1500 at 55MPH in overdrive
and 2100 at 55MPH without overdrive.

So many variables! Transmission, differential gearing, tire size. :) In regards to automatics, I've heard that the highway cruising rpm can be reduced 100 rpm or so by putting on a high flow intake. Not sure if it's true.

My 2005 runs at 2000 at 70 rpm. It has 3.73 gears and 265/75R16s on it. The speedo is right on as per GPS. At 55 its running about 1700 rpm.
