02 mercury mountaineer
I have an 02 mountaineer with the plastic style side steps which are pretty faded. I did a search on here and only found info on the metal steps but what should I use to paint them black again? Should I get a texture paint or or what I just don't want chipping and peeling also should I clear coat it? Next question can you remove window pillars to paint I don't want to paint them on my car. Thanks

The pillars will have to be painted on the vehicle. Just open the doors and mask off everything around them.
The steps can be taken off but it'd be easier to paint them on the vehicle as well. I'd use the aerosol bedliner on them to give them a good look and texture. Clear coat won't hurt. Just be sure to prep the areas well and an adhesion promoter would be the best thing you could buy also.

To remove the running boards I have to remove all bolts to hardware mounts right? I can't just unbolted the small bolts on underneath?

If you undo just the small nuts then only the part where your foot touches will come off. To remove the entire running board you have to remove the big nuts.

Yea that's what I want just plastic part so I can paint it. But I removed tjr six small bolts where mounting bracket is but it still didn't pull off do I have to remove all twenty or so bolts?

Here's my write up for painting the rear pillar trim: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums//showthread.php?t=284189

I left the rear ones in place because they are riveted and it is really easy to mask the surrounding area. In post #56 I explain how to remove the side pillars for sanding and paint off the Ex.

Good luck. Hope this helps out!! :D

Thanks finished side steps they look so much better black then faded grey I used krylon plastic paint worked perfectly

Standing by for pics..............

Pillars done except for the rear ones I might just vinyl wrap them. Now one last thing any ideas on removal of mercury circle emblem on hatch I want to paint it all black how does it remove.

I'm not sure, but it's probably a stick-on.
If it is, a good way to remove it is with
dental floss. Take the floss and 'saw' it
back and forth between the emblem and
the hatch.
