I just bought my 96 Explorer a couple of weeks ago. Now it is running rough especially at idle. The vehicle shakes during initial acceleration also. The guy I bought if from changed the plugs and wires. It seems to me that I may need to check them again anyway in case he made an error. What else should I check? MAF sensor? O2 sensors?

He might have mixed up some of the wires on the coil side. I’m not sure about your 96, but I know with the earlier generations the specific order of the coils did not exactly match the position of the cylinders. Good chance this may be the reason

Pull the plugs and see if he at least put anti-seize on the threads

Check the gaps too. It should still run pretty good if the gap wasn’t perfect, but if that sucker is way off I’m sure it could cause problems/misfires.

Other then that a faulty fuel injector could be at fault

Or worse, a dime size hole in the one of the exhaust valves, but I can almost guarantee any stock 4.0 isn’t going to experience that!

I have a good Haynes manual for this vehicle so I will check the it out on this as well. Thanks for the advice on this! Greatly appreciated!
