Got some minor work done today on our 1994 XLT we bought back in August, we had new plugs and shocks put on. They did the work for a reasonable price, however they are saying that the back end of the frame is rotting out bad. It's safe for now but probably won't pass a vehicle inspection (due in August) And likely not worth the money to have that part fixed. So after discussing it a bit, me and the missus decided to sell it within the next week or so. We didn't pay that much for it, and haven't had it for long, but have loved that vehicle since we first got it. I did some minor fixes and tinkering on it myself too. We do have a 2nd vehicle now, so we won't be stuck, but even though I feel I am doing the right thing, it still sucks to have to sell it. I don't have the money or resources to get that work done. But I am hoping that whoever owns it next can get that done and keep her on the road for a long while longer.

We do plan, hopefully in 3-6 months or so to get another Explorer. Probably a 2nd generation, but if its working excellent, looks good, and in our budget, we'll get it. I will be still lurking and commenting on the forum here.

I had the same issue with my 96 explorer surprisingly and I hauled over a tone of stone a couple times before noticing it! A mechanic friend of mine cut out the rusted up thin metal and his dad welded in 1/4 inch steel to replace the section cut out and was able to pass inspection like that I got it done for $55.00 if you don't want to get rid of it I would call around on prices of getting it repaired. Another option is a frame swap but it'll take a good bit of time to do it.

see where it is rotted and what "bad" means...Those frames can be welded with new iron.

yea always check prices yourself dont take other peoples word for it =]

I'm picking up the Explorer from the shop tomorrow and will have checked where it's rotted and how bad it really is. I'll try to snap a few pic too.

yea thats a good idea and try and find a metal shop or someone you no that welds instead of a body shop in order to get best price and good results

Mine was rusted behind the leaf spring shackle on both sides....the frames rotting isn't too common, if it's rusted bad I would double check your floor boards too and see what kind of shape they are in.

No pics yet on the rust, just got the truck back, but not only the back part of the frame rusted out but the crossbeam in back is all rusted through. They said the spare tire was going to fall out of its place soon and would even put it back, they just loaded it up behind the back seat. At this point I am going to sell it, get another Explorer in the near future.

Yeah, that seems pretty substantial.
