How's it going my name is Scott and I just got myself a 01 ST. Just seeing your guy's opinion on how I should set-up the rig. I'm going to use it for camping/weekend warrior, heavy snow days, and my road traveling vehicle. I will be camping and doing weekend wheeling trips the most I'm either going to keep the IFS, or do a dana 44/8.8" full width front 3 link and rear leaf combo.
The things that will be the same with either set-up will be rebuilt motor, CAI, full exhaust, rebuilt HD auto tranny, rebult tcase, chip, gauges, oil/tranny coolers, bumpers, roof rack, in the bed tire carrier/tool box, and probly alot more items.
If I do the IFS set-up would most likely consist of 3" body, add a leaf, 2"tt, 33/12.50 tires, gears (4.10-4.56 haven't decided) and some sort of lockers. I think this set-up will be better for the road trips and snow days, But I feel I will quickly find its limitations while hitting the trails.
If I do the SAS I would use a full width dana 44 with a tie rod over knuckle conversion, 4" wild horse lift coils (want about 5" of lift), custom long radius arms, adjustable trac-bar, f-250 shock mounts, 1 1/2" DOM draglink and tierod with chevy TRE's, and a explorer/toyota IFS steering box haven't decided yet. For the rear I would use the full width 8.8", with either a soa and a add a leaf or keep it aos and order custom lift leaf springs (for better on the road manners). Both axles will be set up with gears(4.56-4.88) and selectable lockers. I would run 35/12.50 tires and want just enough lift to prevent rubbing so I can keep the best center of gravity I can. I think this will be the funnest set-up but haven't had enough experience on SAS trucks on the highway for trips.
My deli ma is which set-up to go with that will be able to fit my needs. I own a custom shop out of Denver so I have the knowledge and tools to do either, so the work doesn't matter. I also have many of the parts needed for the SAS just lying around from previous projects. So I guess I'm asking what the members here would go with if it was there own rig and why.
Thanks
Scott

Right away I thought keep the IFS, but it sounds like you have the means and know-how, so I'd go for the SAS. It will be much more reliable in the long run, and if you want to do more than the "camping/weekend warrior, heavy snow days" you can do it without wondering if you might break something. If something does let go, it will be easier to repair as well. If set up right, the SAS will be just fine on the road.

Another shop in the Denver area.... nice! Where abouts is the shop?
Yeah were located off I-25 and Alameda name is Local Customs. We are one of the only one stop shops offering repair, metal fab, upholstery, performance, body/paint, pretty much anything you need done we can do.

Those were pretty much my exact thoughts.Looks like I'll have a SAS ST in the semi near future...lol

I'll be watching this closely since I'm in the process of collecting all of the parts I need for my SAS, SOA. I'm using a '89 Grand Waggy Dana 44, Rancho 44044 lift springs, CTM D44 u-joints, H1 Hummer double beadlock (recentered to 6 bolt centers) wheels and 37x12.50x16.5 Goodyear Military OZ MTR's, either 4.88 or 5.13 gears, ARB air locker with double fed compressor (for front and air tools, etc.), PowerTrax locker for rear, Chromoly axles shafts, Bilsteins shocks, etc... never ending. LOL

Still need to get the lockers, gears, axle shafts, shocks and some odds and ends. Hopefully I'll be starting the build next winter.
