Will the second gen 16" rims fit on a first gen Explorer? I have access to some 245 75 16 and 215 85 16s however my 92 explorer has only 15" rims.

I have a set of 265/75r16 on my 92 and I love em. Now I'm looking for another set of 16" rims for my 94, I may do a 235/85r16 on it, no lift on either one. My 2000 has 285/60r17 on Centerlines, no lift. The only rubbing I get is on the sway bar at full lock in reverse & I can live with it.

The 2nd gen rim are the same offsets and widths as the older 91-94, they are a direct swap. I have 99-01 Limited wheels on my 99, which has a 93 body on it(rear clip). The chassis and wheel dimensions didn't really change between generations, just minor body mount, radiator, firewall details. Beyond those almost anything will swap between them.

Below is my 1993 Limited with the 99 Limited wheels, before I cut up the body to rebuild the 99.

Yes, but not all Gen II rims are 16 inch rims. Most were 15 inch rims. And the 16 inch rim measures 17 inches from out edge to outer edge. (I never knew that).

Good luck.

The 16x7" wheels began in 1998 I think, or late 98 and then all of 1999. There were two 16" Explorer wheels then, the 99-01 Limited, and the 16" version similar to the 15" tear drop wheels. I have both of those, one spare set of the "tear drop" 16's. I didn't think they came on 98's, but I've read people say they were stock on their 98 Explorer.

I thought the front hub bore was larger on the first gens?

I think the 99 wheels fit fine, my 91 and 92 were 4WD. That front hub is large, but I've put the Limited wheels on it, and two spares that came from my 98 and 99 trucks. Maybe some wheels might not, I didn't try others. I just put what I had on, and it cleared fine.

That does mean that 4WD 1st gens couldn't use center caps on the front, I didn't think of that.
