Second Row Head Rest Removal

That was mac2979 that had the issue Peter so I don't know if it did or not.
Whoops. Time to turn this thing off and watch some TV for the evening. BTW, my account still hasn't updated. :)

Only one side has the push button, the other is solid plastic
Mine has a button on both posts, both on the left side of the post as you're facing forward.

Did this ever get resolved??
No, because its as designed. After some research by my dealers service center, the only way to remove the middle head rest would be to take the seat apart to get at the pin that keeps it in place. Not sure when this was changed, but this is how it is in the 2021. So I either take the seat apart, cut the bars or just live with how it is.. I went with just live with it.

Did this ever get resolved??
Yes, after some research by my dealers service center its by design the middle head rest doesn't come out. My options would be to take the seat apart to get at the pin that holds it in, cut the bars and not have a head rest or just live with it... I choose to just live with it. The middle option seat is kind of a dumby seat and has none of the options of the other two.

Someone on the 5th gen had the same question and I pointed them to this thread. Thank you.

But can you remove the headrest?
Yes. I just fold 'em down, though. once they're folded, the view to the rear is good.

In other words, they can't be removed, just folded.

That's not what I said. "Yes" means I can remove them entirely. I don't have a center headrest (captain's chairs), but considering the middle unit is the one that is most dangerous in terms of view obstruction, I suspect it'll come out, too.

My mistake. Misread the post. Thank you.

@mac2979 did you ever try contacting Ford directly? It makes no sense to not make it removable as they already have the part needed to do so. And the cost would be very minimal.

I found this long dead thread while trying to remove the middle headrest to install a car seat on my ‘23 Explorer. There’s a U shaped pin on the post without a button, down under the plastic collar, that needs to be pulled out. Seat doesn’t need to be taken apart and someone with small fingers and pair of needle nosed pliers can do it.

Hoping at least one person finds this useful!
