Hey fellow members,

My name is Matt, I am husband, a father of three, a veteran, and currently a firefighter paramedic for my community. After years of silently benefiting from the wealth of knowledge shared here, I'm finally reaching out for help.

First and foremost, I want to express my deepest gratitude to each one of you. The tips, tricks, and valuable information I've gained from this community have been instrumental in keeping my trusty truck running smoothly for an impressive 23 years.

However, as much as I've enjoyed tinkering with my truck over the years, there are certain repairs that are beyond my capabilities. Currently, I find myself in need of a transmission replacement (4r70w), and local shops are quoting me a hefty $4k price tag.

With limited skills, tools, and time on hand, I thought it would be a great opportunity to upgrade the drive-train and transfer case with a 4406. If anyone would be willing to lend a hand in getting my truck back on the road, I am more than happy to compensate you fairly for your time and services.

If you're interested or know someone who might be able to assist me with this task, please do not hesitate to reach out. I am located in southeastern Georgia and am willing to travel.

Once again, thank you all for being such an incredible source of inspiration and knowledge.

Thanks,

Matt

Welcome! Where in the country are you?

Nevermind I turned my phone sideways and finished reading lol I can see you are in georgia

It is possible to guide you through the r and r process, followed by the install of the new 4406 and drivelines

What happened that you need a reman/custom 4r?

Welcome! Where in the country are you?
savannah georgia

also FYI, jamie (410) is the guy when it comes to anything v8!

and welcome!!!! though im on the other side of the country, wanted to say thank you for all you do for your community!

does that 4k tag include a rebuilt trans or trans rebuild? since here iirc as of a year or so ago it was 500 to drop in a trans you supply, or thereabouts. oftentimes you can source a low mile unit, or companies such as powertrain products have a good price.

$4k is a lot for a rebuild when there's people that have never seen the inside of a transmission, successfully rebuilding the 4R70W for $500 without using any specialty tools.

Thank you for the warm welcome.

The transmission over time has developed a shake and has gotten worse over time. This leads me to believe the source is the transmission’s planetary gears. The drive shaft is not warped and the cv joints are in great shape. The truck shakes at idle with no other drive train parts rotating.

Yes, 4k is the install price for a remanufactured 4r with a 100k warranty.

As much as I love this truck, the price is steep just to swap out a transmission. Since the tranny needs to be replaced, my thoughts are, upgrade the transfer case with the 4406 mod while everything is out. LKQ and local junkyards here have used 4Rs and 4406s with the necessary drive shafts for less than $1k. Again, I don't have the skills, tools, or time to accomplish this type of job. I’m reaching out to the community in or near my area who would consider taking on this project. I would rather compensate someone from this community for their time and effort who loves these trucks as much we do.

I would suspect you have a bad awd t case way before I suspect a bad auto trans

How
Many miles?

a shake at idle does not sound like a transmission issue, it sounds like a dead miss.
Any codes?

If I wasn’t 1800+ miles from you I would be happy to help convert this bad boy to a real 4wd. We can get a good 4r waaaaay cheaper then $4000 just need to find somebody to help with r & r

I’m not sold you have a transmission issue

Thank you for your insight!

I have 310k miles and no codes.

What is fuel pressure?
I’m sure you have done plugs wires, maybe cleaned the mas?
Change fuel filter?

With those miles, a shaking 5.0 I am suspecting a bad injector or two. Shaking 5.0 usually means a dead miss. If you suspect the transmission this tells me you have already been through possible causes on the engine side of things?

I haven't checked the fuel pressure, plugs or wires. I recently changed the fuel filter and cleaned the mas.

I made an assumption the issue was the transmission without considering the engine. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Heck yes!first suspect is plugs and wires!!

Ignition miss is very difficult for the computer to see so a shake at idle and no codes really points to you need a tune up!
Plugs and wires on these engines will last a long long time and are often over looked.

We run Autolite or motorcraft platinum or double platinum plugs. You need good ignition wires not the cheapo parts store sets they are garbage. Crappy wires at parts stores are like $75-90 while a hood set of wires online is like $40-60. I will not run “Omni spark” or any of the cheap parts store wires they are not worth the box they ship in.
Routing of the wires is extremely important to keep from melting them on the exhaust.
We can point you to the good/ acceptable parts online if you are interested.

You can try watching your engine run in the dark and oook around the plugs and wires see if you see any blue arcing

I only started to suspect injectors or fuel issue because I assumed you have already addresses a basic tune up!

Let’s get this sucker running, hopefully for well under $4000 smackers!!

I followed your recommendation and ordered Motorcraft wires and Autolite double platinum plugs. Ships today, package will be here tomorrow🤞
