Explorer '97 XLT V8 AWD
We just upgraded the tow vehicle, and I am selling the 97 Explorer. Part of our decision to upgrade is because the Explorer has developed a barely noticable shudder in overdrive. I changed all the tranny fluid and filter (using the Mercon V Ford recommends) with no improvement. The suspension bushings are also just getting old, and the vehicle is just getting old in general and we wanted something newer. Otherwise it's in great shape, except the tires are getting a little low. Mind you, this shudder is very slight, and only occurs in OD and on slight upgrades with slight throttle. I am getting it diagnosed, and I think it is related to a bad TCC solenoid, which I can replace for $50.

So I'm debating between:

A) Not doing anything, and selling as is for around $4000. I'd of course mention th eshudder.
B) Replacing TCC solenoid (if that is the problem), putting on new tires, and selling for at lest $5000
C) Just putting on new tires, and do nothing abouot the tranny (and mention that it slips), and maybe asking $4500.

So how much would a slight tranny shudder and low tires mean to any of you? Be realistic here...this is a 10 Y.O. vehicle that is otherwise in great shape. I'm not asking if YOU would buy it [Smile]

Most private sales of this same vehicle are around $5100, and dealers are getting $5600 or more. How in the ballpark am I with my figures above?

More specs: 1997 FOrd Explorer XLT, Leather, V8 (302), Tow Package, PW, PDL, cruise, AM/FM CD changer, power front seats with power lumbar, alloy wheels, 122,000 miles. Well maintained, all major service done by dealership. Clean title and Carfax report.

Thanks!!!

Worn tires aren't an issue providing they wore evenly. Uneven wear can imply front end problems which could scare some people off. The trans shudder would be more of a concern to the average buyer. If you can fix it cheaply, it will be money well spent to enable you to get top dollar. While the mileage isn't horribly high, some people get scared off once it's > 100k. I also suggest trying to sell it quickly before the price of gas goes back up. Just my 2 cents..
