Hello, my 5.0 is having an issue with the serpentine belt jumping alignment. It has new idler pulleys, belt tensioner, belt etc. I've put about 100 miles on everything so far mostly issue free until today. The orignal issue was squealing and the belt would cause power steering to not work on cold startups in winter for a minute or two. Now with all the new parts it was fine until I went through a carwash. The squeal came back and disappeared after a day (I assume it got water on it). Now today (-5F) I started it up after it was warmed with the block heater and it was thumping, I popped the hood and saw the belt is jumped one rib on the power steering pump pulley. Maybe the cold caused it to misalign? The top center idler before the power steering is smooth afterall. Thoughts?

For reference this is a 2000 5.0 with 116k miles. Original AC, PS and WP as far as I know. I shut the truck down immediately because I didn't NEED to drive it in this cold today. Not sure why the belt jumped, it was fine on it's roadtrip this weekend and driving in town the previous night

Loosen the belt, check alternator pulley for slop, or, in out play
Checking that when it gets nicer. The PS have a little in out play. I know "some" is normal. I'm hoping it's because it's so cold. Haha

I'd guess that you need a new power steering pump, was the problem all along, though in addition to checking play on the rest, I'd do a visual confirmation that all pulleys are aligned on the same plane, that none are offset from the rest, and that the belt tension is good. Did you compare the old and new belt length and find the new, same length or a little shorter?

It's not normal for it to jump or misalign when it's cold.

I'm thinking the PS pump is probably junk. I've been replacing everything slowly

PS pump is junk. Has anyone had good luck with aftermarket or remans? I'd imagine a "used" or junk yard special will have the dame issue as mine at some point soon as mine is low mileage. Checked around online and dealerships can't get a new one. Limited options out there

As everything that is remanufactured, you don't know nothing about quality and how it is reman.
I would prefer a new power steering pump.
I don't have any issues with my 97 sohc PS pump, but i recognized that the pulley has some in/out play too
to compensate a little belt unalignment. Never had a hopping squealing belt, but bad alternator beerings
make similar noises.
