Hi, My 1996 Explorer XLT V6 4.0 needs to pass inspections so that I can register it. There were a few CEL issues, I've got all but one to go off, p0761 Shift Solenoid C Performance or Stuck Off. I can't find anything in my manuals about this and my mechanic told me it will cost me $1500 to have him fix it. I can't do that, so I'm hoping this is something I could do myself. Where is this Solenoid and is it easy to replace? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Welcome to this forum! Drop the lower pan on the transmission. You will see a series of solenoids. Check this solenoid, and the internal wiring harness. There is a sticky thread on the top of the transmission section called the 5R55E valve body rebuild diary. Check this thread for information.

Thanks for that info!

Thanks for that info its going to be really helpful when I do the work. I'm ready to buy the parts now, but I'm not sure what and where to buy them. Any ideas? And how would I know which solenoid is C? I was thinking if they're cheap, I would just replace all of them. Thanks

they are not very cheap,
epc (pressure control) i seem to recal is the most expensive.
a shift solenoid i would guess would be like $60??

Performance or stuck off This is the code I got how do I fix it? I took it to 2 different mechanics and both want to rebuild my transmission for 1200.00. It shifts it just doesn't seem to go into overdrive. Please help!

Shift solenoid #3 is not functioning either because the solenoid is dead and is always open, or the valve is stuck in the bore (so hydraulic force can't move it), or the power is not getting to the solenoid (all the solenoids get power from the same circuit), or the PCM is not grounding that circuit. First thing to do is check the solenoid. It is one of the 2 on one side; the other side has 4 solenoids together. #3 is the one that is far away from the reverse servo cover (round cover held in by 4 8 mm screws). Take it out and do a bench test. If it is good, do a circuit continuity test. Is it getting 12v? Let the valve come out; it should come out easily. If it's stuck in there, the valve body may be warped. The solenoid activates ONLY when the PCM is telling the tranny to go into O/D. Good luck.

lol..
Transmission Shop : "Yup, solenoid code, need a whole new transmission, that'll be $4000 please."

My littler brother just got severely hosed at a trans shop for his 2010 F-150.
It needed a solenoid, instead he got everything else instead of that, 3 weeks downtime and a $5000 bill.

The best auto transmission has no electronic guts. We live in the land of over-engineering.
