97 XLT Sport
Hi all. I have a 97 Explorer XLT Sport that is ready for new shocks. Any recommendations out there? Could actually use some tires too - not sure what type is best - all driving on pavement - unfortunately.

I moved this to the Shocks and Suspensions forum...

any brand of gas or nitro shocks would be good (not expensive). as for tires get some all terran's they come with a 50,000 mile warranty

Shocks, you can probably go with some monroe sensatracs. Tires, get a good AT, you'll probably need them for the MN winters.

check rancho rs9000.

best deal on the market.

Ironically-- I was about to post with the same thing..

My g/f's 99 just WALLOWS down the road-- it's like driving in a hurricane.. Uh-- but the only wind is me doing 75.. :)

Is anybody using the adjustables-- on an non adjustable Ford suspension.. Like the original post, this Explorer is a "surburban assault vehicle.." (read Yuppiemobile)..

I imagine I could "off road" it once, before my beloved made me sleep in the garage.. And I've got an old F-150 with better ground clearance for that, anyway!! :)

What kind of shocks pretty much depends on what characteristics you want your ride to have. If you want firm handling, Bilsteins are some of the best out there. I have the Bilsteins and love 'em, but the ride might be a little firm for some people. KYB Monomax, Tokico, and the Monroe Reflex shocks are pretty good premium dampers too. If you want a nice ride that's more like stock, you could go with something like the Monroe Sensatracs or KYB GR-2's.
Budget offerings like the regular Monroes are ok, but I suggest the KYB Gas-A-Just for a budget shock, since it's a pretty good deal for a high-pressure monotube design shock.

As for tires, if you're sticking with the stock tire size and doing all pavement driving, it's pretty hard to beat the Michelin Cross Terrain SUV. You can find these almost anywhere. I use the Michelin LTX M/S, which is similar. The Yokohama Geolandar H/T-S seems to be a good choice with lots of good online reviews, and Goodyear's latest offerings, the Fortera TripleTred and Fortera SilentArmor, seem to be really good performers.

Take a look at the Rancho 9000s; best shock I have ever used.

Good luck ........

since i dont mind such a rough ride i really liked the bilstein OEM replacements, for me it was worth every penny and made the vehicle handle much better,my second choice would be rancho though

Do a search, there are many threads about shocks here.

The Bilsteins would be a good choice. At work we would use the KYB Monomax in the front and the Gas-A-Just in the rear. Stay away from Rancho, Monroe, Gabriel and any "lift" company shocks. We've tried just about everthing made and Mono-tube shocks are the only ones that hold up.
