not sure where to put this question. it is probably a stupid one but what causes a vehicle to shock you when i get out, it seems like some kinda static charge of some kind. just curious i dont like getting shocked every time i exit my vehicle

Doesn't happen to me in either Ex. What kinda (seat) material do you have, and is the air drier up there?

You know, that happens when my girlfriend gets out of my explorer all the time! She's always saying how my truck hates her. I was wondering if it had to do with wearing jewls or the type of clothing she wears. Cuz you know? when you twist your butt a little to get out of the truck it rubs on the fabric? LOL! I don't know. Im def. going to be checking back at this thread though to see if anybody has the answer. I don't think it's preventable though.

Mythbusters did an exposed on gas stations catching on firer. They found that some material in woman's clothing did cause more static electricity.

That's because you live in CA.

It's because the cold dry air is ceating static electricity. I have seen the arc from the door to my finger on several ocasions. It has happened on every car I have owned.

I have to run a humidifier in my house in the winter. Other wise what ever you touch (including people/pets) you get ZAPPED. The poor cat has been shocked on the nose more than a few times.

lol i live in NC and every time my friend ray gets ouit of my car it shocks him. im tall so i can just step out and my wife is short so she just kinda falls out but ray gets shocked every time lol

hahaha i get shocked pretty much every time i get out of my ex. i have cloth seats and i guess just rubbing on them and then touching metal creates the shock. just like rubbing your feet across carpet and touching someone or a door knob. or the balloon and hair trick. plus drier air has something to do with it. i live in missouri and it happens to me frequently in the winter. un avoidable it seems to me

Must be static from material- I have leather in my NOrthface and dont get that at all.

My Mountaineer has leather seats and I get zapped like a ****.

i wonder if i could spray some static guard or something like that on the upholstry to maybe stop this for a while

That's another + for living in CA  Try using Static Guard...

Yes, it's because it's so dry here, you can try one of those static guard sprays but honestly I don't think that will help much, it's just a fact of life around here, unless you change out your seats to leather or just get different seat covers, you're gonna get shocked. Notice it only happens when you are getting out?

You need a grounding strap, try hooking up a length of chain to the seat-belt bolt and when you open the door, throw the chain out on the ground to discharge the static LOL

That would make it seem like he was throwing an anchor out of his door haha. Be sure to let everyone know you found dry land.

I hope no one takes my post TOO seriously
I used to drive a logging truck so big chains in the truck was a must have.

Would this work??

Hmm? :p:
