OK, so I just had the right rear wheel bearing changed in my car last week. This week I went to change the brakes. Left worked just fine with standard 3/4 inch tool (came with the car). Right hand lugnuts wouldn't come off - come to find out, it appears that the lugnuts require a 7/8" or 1" socket rather than the standard 3/4 socket.

Looked at the lugnuts and they are bright and shiny new and don't match the rest of the lugnuts on the other 3 wheels.

Wondering if any lugnut experts would care to shed the light on how the shop could install the wrong size lugnuts on my car.

If the thread pitch and seat angle are correct, then they are not the wrong size. Just because they take a different tool doesn't make them bad. Maybe that is what they had laying around. Were you charged for them?

They're the wrong size because a 3/4 inch socket doesn't remove them. I have no way of changing the tire with my standard socket set, nor with the factory provided tool.

You need a good 4 way

No I don't.

What I need is a car that all 4 tires have the same size lugnuts.

It's stupid to have a car where one tire has different size lugnuts than the rest.

You need a good 4 way

Hey, I have an idea! Why don't you ask the shop about it?

Yeah, that is the plan tomorrow.

I guess I'm wondering - do lugnuts come in different hex sizes for a particular bolt (stud) size? Or perhaps they had to replace the studs and used a larger stud size, requiring a larger lugnut size?

If they simply grabbed the wrong lugnuts, it won't be a big deal to put the correct size lugnuts back on. If they replaced the studs, then I have a much bigger issue on my hands.

Is my car even safe to drive?

Yes, I'm annoyed. I'm halfway through a brake job and can't finish it when I want to.

The question is why would they put a different set on. If it's a mix up, that's kind of scary. There's no reason for it. Call them and see what they say. Might still have yours or at least be able to get them. I agree, having different sizes would be annoying.
All of this of course assuming those werent already on your car.
Yes, you can have a different size hex work with the same bolts.

And running different sizes has no affect on drivability. I ran two different sizes for more than six months. I kinda doubt that the lug size is 1", as that is very large.

Turdle was being nice and you came back with attitude. Try to calm down before replying. The 4 way is a good idea, as a 4 way is a tool meant for lugs, having 4 common lug sizes.

When I just replaced all 20 lugs I searched around to find size and shape I preferred. I currently am running 13/16" lug size and not the stock 3/4". Try ascending socket sizes until you reach one that works.
