'92 Explorer
Hello everybody, I currently own a '96 Ranger 4x4 and am starting to look for a Explorer since I cannot put a baby seat in the back of the Ranger, the Ranger has to go. I've got a lift and some other mods done to it so I want to transfer my parts across, my question is this what do I want to look out for when buying an Explorer. I already know I want a 5speed manual but I want to know where rust collects and other things that tend to go wrong with these rigs. Thanks in advance.

Rust collects in the rocker panels and fenders mostly, so if you see any rust when you open the door, there will be more. 94 is the best year obviously, but finding a manual might be hard.

94 has better heads than earlier years. You already know not to get an auto trans. No rust out here, so I can't tell you the trouble spots. :D

Thanks for the replies guys. Are there any years to stay away from? I've got quite a bit of time before I have to get an Explorer and I am quite picky so I just want to collect as much info as I can to make an educated decision.

91-92 have weaker head castings, less horsepower, and often a single core radiator and light duty fan. I am also not a big fan of their computer and wiring setup.

93 the heads were improved, less prone to cracking. The 93 also had no EGR, a better wiring harness (fuse box and relays under the hood) no more MAP sensor and dual 02 sensors.

94 is the same but with egr

In 93 the Mazda 5 speed was also strengthened internally.

I like the 93's, but the 94's are the same, jsut with the addition of EGR.

Your 96 Ranger lift should work perfect on any 91-94 Explorer.

I see very clean 4x4 93-94 trucks go for $3500-4500 around here.

Look for rust in the rockers, around the rear brake lights (hatch open) and under the hood (firewall)

my explorer had rust on the rear of the rocker panels on both sides. I've seen several other explorers like that. I guess depending upon what model you get, the rust might be covered up by a plastic rocker panel cover. I don't know much other than that. I have a 93 xlt and everything seems to work just fine. The only problem i've come across is a faint ticking sound coming from the pushrods when the motor is cold
