I have heard from mainly the people at the auto parts store that it is good to use some sort of engine cleaner/flush before you change your oil. They said it gets rid of all the deposits and "slush". Is this really a good idea? If so what kind/brand is best?
There's pros and cons to both sides. How many miles on it ? Some people prefer never to add any type of detergent to the oil...but some do. I use slick50 for high milers in place of one quart oil...about once every 10-15k. It helps reduce friction, and improves compression. But as far as any heavy duty detergents..they can often do more harm than good...IMO. Heavy duty detergents can ruin seals and gaskets. Especially in high milers...that build up you want to flush out... has settled into the gaskets, and works as a barrier preventing oil leaks. If you use a heavy detergent you could quite possibly end up having to replace your oil pan gasket...which is a hUge PITA. Not worth the chance...but thats just my opinion.
I've heard nothing but bad things about Slick 50. But yes, if you use a cleaner in the oil or a synthetic oil, you will chance oil leakage. I've done both on an engine with over 160,000 miles and have hardly any leaking at all.
I put 1/3 can of Seafoam in my oil and didn't notice any difference. When changing the oil it was the same as other times.. I'd just use it through the engine.

Yep I also should have added that. Like Husky, I didn't see much difference in the oil from the last time I changed it to when used with SeaFoam. It's the most effective when put through the TB.

Then why is it that countless people say that if an older, higher mileage engine is changed over to synthetic after using dino oil, then there's a chance for oil leakage because of the slickness of the synthetic?
I use which ever 5 qt jug is on sale usually just buy the oil and filter at Wallmart.
i change my oli close to every 2 months just to help my beliefs that frequent changes are better. everyone has their own opinion on when to change and what kind of oil to use never have bought synthetic oil when it came out ages ago back when i was a young pup I thought it was too expensive...
I have now thanks to this board started to jump on that SEAFOAM bandwagon that started few weeks ago when i had a problem with wifes windstar and 2 cans of that and problem went away.
so i just over the weekend put one can in the oil. One can in fuel tank. And one can in the transmission I have over 150000 miles on my 1995 Explorer and would hope that adding any additive at that high of miles would not hurt the engine just help it a little.
have heard about adding SEAFOAM thru the intake or brake booster but wasnl;t sure what to do or how to do that.
