I've just bought a '99 Explorer XLT and the side stripe is starting peel. I'd like to replace it, but I have no idea where to start. Has anyone done this before? Seems like it might be a job for a professional, but I'd like to do it myself if possible.

  • How do i peel off the original?
  • Where do I find a stripe online that will fit?
  • How in the heck do I apply it straight?

Thanks!!

It may just peel off. If not take some rubbing and wipe it down with it and apply some to it as you peel it.

Depending on the style of it you can get pin stripes at any auto store that is very similar to factory. I put one on mine and just followed the break in the body line where yours is probably located. I ended up doing a few inches at a time and got it pretty straight, you have to really look at it to notice it's not totally straight. I wouldn't recommend doing it that way. They way the pros. do it is to cut a piece say for the door and start one end of the stripe then holding the other end try to go along and lay the whole thing down at once following the line you want. That takes practice though.

Most people on here will tell you to take it off and leave it off. Most seem to prefer not having pin stripes. Personally I like them, the way they break up the side of the vehicle.

Yeah, I like it, and was hoping to get something a little more unique in it's place. I'd like to seperate my Explorer from the thousands of others in the area. :p:

It will help to heat the stripe with a hair dryer while you peel it off. Use some adhesive remover to remove any glue left behind then hand wash it. You can buy the stripe at most auto parts stores, or call a pro if you don't get it straight enough.

Thanks for all the tips, I'll start checking out auto stores for a replacement stripe.

there is a buffer tool made to take that off...its like a art eraser but fits in a drill.... check your local parts store
