Hey all,
I have a 1994 XLT, 4.0 ohv, 5spd, 111K mi on it.
I recently crawled under it to change the t-case fluid, and saw that the tranny had some fluid coating it where it met up to the engine.
So, I checked the fluid level in the tranny, because I read about the rubber plugs that go bad. Tranny was full, i mean fluid came out the check hole when i opened it up.
My question is, how do i tell if the fluid is tranny fluid, oil, or hydraulic fluid from the clutch? It's black from road crud, and I can see no obvious source.
It's a slow leak, no drips or streams. Oil was only 1/2 quart low after 3K miles.
Also, I checked the forums, and all I saw was a front seal on the auto trannies that goes bad, but I have a manual.
Sorry for the long post, but I'm moving in a month and don't want the X to die en route.
Any help would be appreciated. :)

Check the clutch fluid resevoir had same problem checked resevoir it was almost empty slave cylinder is mounted inside the bellhousing and when it goes bad it fills the bell up with fluid

I'll do that as soon as it's light tomorrow.
I hope that's not the prob, clutch still seems tight, but I've had the slave done like twice before, so who knows.
Again, thanks, and I'll check it tomorrow when I get up.

Not again...

I hope it's not the slave cylinder. I've had that done twice. Once with the master cylinder, clutch, flywheel, etc, and once when it failed on its own.
I topped off the clutch fluid, but I have no way of knowing where it was before.
So, I guess from here it's a waiting game, to see if the fluid lvl falls at all.
Again, the pedal didn't feel soft like last time the slave went, but this is a very slow creeping leak.
Well, thanx for the help and I'll hope for the best here.

BTW, is there anything that would make a slave cylinder fail prematurely? Becaue if that's the problem it's been two slaves in under 25,000 miles.
