Just a few random quesitons. Vehicle is 93 explorer

The top two defroster lines on the liftgate work, the rest dont. Is this a common problem?

The dash parking brake light comes on about 80% of the time when parking brake is in use. Why would it not come on the other 20%

I think the top right bolt in the thermostat housing is stripped. Doesnt leak, is there a way to repair it? A sleeve?

It has a auto trans. When I shift from P to D etc... its jumps up to around 1500 RPM, and then drops quickly to about 700. Does this mean anything? Transmission doesnt seem to slip gears when cold or warm (as far as I know).

The Trans position indicator on the guage cluster doesnt line up on the position correctly. Its off about 1/3 of a position to the left (i.e. when in D, it shows inbetween OD and D)

for the defrost check the switch and fuses

for the parking light check the switch i think its near the peddle just look around or the sensor at the brakes

dont know what to tell you about the bolt. maybe cut a groove in it somehow and use a screw driver to remove?

Ill check those things out.

I was changing the thermostat while I replaced the radiator. It had both bolts and the stud holding the housing on, but one of the bolts turned twice and then pulled out. I put it back together and it hasnt leaked yet... but I think the housing (not the bolt) is stripped.

for the defroster grid ...look to see if there are any broke lines ..no matter how small ( only takes a pin size groove to kill the grid) ,they make a silverised mettalic paint that is used to repair defroster lines with ( sorry don't know the name of it )

Well, I hate to tell ya, but it's not the "housing" either. The "housing" in really called a water neck by the part houses, and has no threads. I think what you mean is the intake bolt hole for the houseing is stripped. I've never paid attention, do these have alum intakes?

Could you fix it? Yes, i'm sure with a trip to Harbor Freight and a few bucks for a rethreading kit. If in fact you have alum intake, then you would need a kit for alum I would think.

Is it worth the trouble?? If it's not leaking...no.

I've had a carb mounting bolt that broke off in my alum intake there for about 6 years on my Trans Am. Mainly it works fine with only 3 mounting bolts and the work it would take to make it "right" isn't worth it. In fact, instead of fixing it, I'm just going to replace the intake when I rebuild the 350.

If it aint broke dont fix it i guess.

Thanks, now I have some things to do this weekend.

any thoughts on the transmission issues?

Also, on my guage cluster the backlighting for the spedometer (35-55 MPH portion) died. I know how to remove the cluster to replace. Are the little lights stocked at Autozone or NAPA? What about the ones for the indication lights ( CEL, Low Range, 4x4, etc...)

Thanks.

All the little instrument cluster lights are the same. Any of the parts houses will have them. Also why you have the cluster out look where trans position indicator is and there will be a little white knob to adjust the position of the needle.

thanks guys. Anybody with a A4LD have any input on the RPM jump while shifting from P to D? Is this normal (my ranger and the other exploder were 5 speeds)

i have the same problem every now and then i thought it was just me:roll:

:cool:wow, lol. I guess everyone on this site with a first gen already did a 5 speed swap...;)

Mines still an auto trans, I can't drive a stick :(

I haven't had this problem. However, maybe the engine is engaging the first drum and it takes a second or so for the trans to realize it has power and tightens the band on the drum OR it could be that the band needs to be adjusted. Brooklyn bay has a list in his signature that has a link to adjusting the bands.

Nope I don't have that problem. My stock A4LD works perfect imo, Only problem it had was the modulator went bad. Replaced that and now only think about everything else that's wrong with my explorer.

Still need....
New MAF
T/C shift motor
possible new radiator
Main bearings replaced (complete engine rebuild next year)
Rust damaged rockers repaired
2.5 to 4" lift
31" tires
New black paint
Diamond clear headlights and corner lights
(some kind of aftermarket brake lights)
Maybe a HID conversion on the headlights. 8,000k or under.
Aftermarket radio installed (just need wiring harness)
New speakers
Q logic sub box
replace front windshield

A JOB :)

I think that's it. I think I'm forgetting something because I always forget something. :(

EDIT: Found used MAF and T/C shift motor for $10, Have to remove myself.

what about the stock tape player LCD backlight? It would come in and out for a while, now its gone?

Sounds like a wiring problem, Maybe a short in the wiring.

Btw, I forgot to list shocks on my list. Told ya I'd forget something :p:
