Was wondering if there is a way to disable the smartlock feature, (Where the door automatically unlock if the key is in the switch)
On my 98 Expedition I could leave running and lock doors. This is a problem because we often travel with show dogs and leave running for the AC when not in vehicle. I have tried all the autolock/unlock stuff and nothing seems to work.

Try this, this will work for 2nd gens, but maybe it will work for yours too. It's worth a try:cool:

open the car with the remote control and put the key into the lock, but don´t turn!
The next 8 steps must within in 30 sconds. Turn the key into the ignition position.
Press 3x the unlock switch to unlock
Turn back the igniton-key into the strip away position (but don´t strip away!)
press again 3x the unlock switch to unlock
Turn the key into the ignition position
now " chirps " the explorer short to report over that he feels well
Press 1x the unlock switch to unlock
Press 1x the unlock switch to lock
He "chirps" again
Turn the key to the strip away position (but don´t strip away!)
Now your Explorer will chirps again to tell you, he apprehended the code.
Last step, you must wait at least 1 minute

I just checked the Owner's Manual for my '07, and the procedure using the key and door lock switches is the same as listed above. There are also two other DIY ways to disable the autolock system.

Keyless entry keypad method (pg 140):
1. Close all doors and rear window and ensure ignition is off.
2. Enter the 5 digit entry code.
3. Press and hold the 3-4 button. While holding the 3-4 button, press the 7-8 button.
4. Release the 7-8 button.
5. Release the 3-4 button.
The horn should chirp once to indicate that the system is disabled.

Message Center Method (pg 108):
The feature is listed under the Setup Menu on the message center.
1. Press and hold the Select/Reset control button to enter the Setup Menu.
2. Press the Setup/Reset button to scroll through the settings to AUTOLOCK.
3. Press and hold the Select/Reset control button to turn the AUTOLOCK feature ON or OFF.

Hope this helps!

Whenever I am doing this (usually in the winter for heat), I have always just used the keypad on the door to lock. You do it by pushing the 7-8 and 9-0 buttons at the same time once the doors are all closed. It won't unlock it again like it will if you use the door switch or the keyless.

That is the way I have been doing it. Close all doors then hit the last two buttons. I wasn't aware of the other fixes, I may try that now.

Correct me if i am wrong, but isn't the AUTOLOCK for the speed sensitive locking of the doors from park, vs. the ability to use the keypad with key in ignition?

try this

If you have the security keyoad on the door you can leave it running and lock the doors with the keypad. That is the only way the doors will lock with the key in the ignition. I do it all of the time!

Hi, Firsttime poster, long time car and explorer guy. The manual has a section on this unlock feature, but I'm not sure about leaving it on and locks after the door has been opened then closed. ( Usually only locking after you reach 10 miles / hr. Some of the more special programming of the lock / unlock features may only be known at your dealer. ( I found this out with the incorrect resetting of our "Time for an oil change" reminder by a "quick lube" outfit. )
Good luck with your efforts, and,
Best regards,
MSH
