I've been looking around online a lot for brush guards for my '93 Explorer XLT since I sold my car and have a little money. The Smittybilt bumper thumper with the deluxe wrap around brush guards seems like the one I want. My only concern is the strength of it. It attaches to the frame and the bumper. I want to be able to hit a deer or small tree and not have any damage to the bumper. Has anyone gotten into an accident or hit something with this guard on? Thanks for any advice you have.

Mine's great

Hey CalixEros,

I had this same question when I was looking for a grill guard.. I have a '94 Explorer XLT and I put the Smittybilt Outland Modular Black Front Guard (seen here:

Dead Link Removed),

on it.. this isn't exactly like the Bumper Thumper, but the middle pieces are very similar. A few weeks ago, I rear-ended a 2001 Eclipse at 15mph, and if the guard you're looking at is as tough as the one I got, you'll be ok. There was absolutely no damage on my car at all, you can't even tell where the car hit on the grill guard. I was pretty amazed. I'm definitely impressed with Smittybilt's products after seeing that.

Hope that helps!

Thanks this is the type of answer I was looking for. One question though. Does yours attach just to the frame or to the frame and the bumper. Thanks.

It attaches to the frame, underneath the lower bumper. It wraps around the front bumper, and is secured on the bumper with a couple of screws to hold the guard up, but the main connection is the frame.

It's not really "secured" to the bumper, it's just screwed in to hold it up, the security comes from the attachment to the frame. Hopefully that makes sense and answers your question!

Thats what I was looking for, thanks Mike
