2000 Ford Explorer

Haven't decided what I'm gonna do with it yet. Picked it up for a good price but stuck with should I try and keep it long term n end up buying parts galore or spending as little as possible so I can sell it and make a little bit.

Somehow I am up to 3 of these things without even meaning to lol. It's an 01 5.0 AWD with dang near every option and garaged it's whole life. Has 280,000 miles but runs like a top and had good compression results. Might see if I can take her to 400k.

Looks good Z

I hear you brother. It's an addition. I have purchased 6 of these trucks to-date. Every time I'd see a nice one on CL for a good price I just couldn't resist (I finally had to stop looking on CL). Everyone in my family now has one and I currently claim 3 for myself, which is actually one too many IMO.

We have the exact twin to your black Merc w/under 200k on it. The V8's (4 of them) seem like they'll easily make 350k +. The biggest issue I'm currently having with the V8's is various fluid leaks, which aren't terrible, but they bug me.

What in the world are those tail lights? Never seen anything like that. And yeah these things will gravitate towards you.

Those tail lights are referred to as "Euro-Style". Clear lenses with red lights underneath. Personally I prefer the stock tail lights lights.

I've seen clear Euro lights before, those just seem different than the sets I've seen.

Nice! How much you want for it?

LOL! Story of my life.
:chug:

I just picked one up (not as pretty as that) for $600 because they couldn't figure out it had a bad wheel bearing. I only got it so I'd have a vehicle till I can buy a jeep. Now I can't decide if I want to get it fixed a little and sell or keep it and keep it up for my son in 8 years. Only has 169k on it.

Start fixing it up and you'll never buy a Jeep.

Fix it and it's at least as fun as a Jeep, you can even change it from AWD to 4WD, there's threads here on doing that if you offroad any and need more than the AWD.

Naw, I've been jonesing for a 4door wrangler since they came out. Plus I can add two more seats in the cargo and carry everyone in the biggest convertible on the road (4kids). But I am debating on what to do with the explorer. Maybe trick it out and keep the jeep mostly stock. It is a nice ride except for uhaul not renting me trailers. I've also got a 39 deluxe and possibly a 31 model A to protect on so the wife may say it's gotta go.

Thanks guys. Still deciding what I will do with it.

As far as the tail lights, they will definitely be changed to stock ones even if I sell it. I'm kind of a stickler for stock lights like that. Which means I will need new headlights and fogs as well to settle my absurdness lol.

As far as price I will probably put it up for 3k. I know I know but around here 4x4s just bring money; it stinks. Literally if it's a 4x4 that will just physically run and drive, it costs 1200-1500 all day long and that's not anything even remotely nice or clean. Just a real high mileage rust bucket that will at the very least need some work to even be close to reliable.

Btw Koda it is the dark blue and tan just for some reason it looks black in the pictures.

I like the 4 door wranglers a lot but to me they are just retardily priced and cost stupid money. There's no reason they should cost what they do.

Glad to see a good amount of replies. Seems like the 95-01 forum has got a little dead this year.

I've been seeing abnormal numbers of them, including V8s, go through salvage, I've been hunting a body with title to fix mine while I still can, since I'm mechanically inclined and have all the time I need.

Where are you located if you don't mind me asking? Yeah I guess they are just finally hitting that 15-20 yr mark where a lot are getting scrapped. Most just don't care about them anymore and if they do want an explorer it's usually not a 95-01 especially with how far advanced and nice the brand new ones have become.

Funny i was just talking to someone yesterday about how more of them are disappearing. However i was at Walmart yesterday and saw 3 of them in the parking lot at once.I am slowly restoring my 98 and wish i would see less of them around so i feel like mine is worth more lol.I feel like i am really wasting my time restoring it tho.I mean hell a new paint job and rockers and rust repair is probly 5K and whats the truck worth at the end of the day ? like 2500.I just love the dam thing but god i feel like a ass putting several thousands into it.Its gonna be like another 10 years before people will even start to notice it after most are off the road.I dont know maybe if i restore it and hold onto it for 30 years it will be worth something ! ha ha ha ha.I have it on youtube and have gotten lots of nice positive comments on how nice it is.I guess its just a labor of love.I do feel i should put money into something that would appreciate instead of depreciating. But at the end of the day i think its so cool for a old truck.Dam i am confused.

That's just how it goes but I know how you feel. At the end of the day most vehicles are big depreciating items though and you can rebuild one of these explorers completely at least twice for the cost of a new one. So it's all relative to how you look at it. Better to fix than a huge vehicle payment every month generally speaking.

You could pry sell those on here, or trade for some stockers...

I'm in South Carolina, most of them have either a trans issue, or a motor issue. Like a 98 I was looking at, I found the reason the motor was blown at 240K was because they towed a trailer load of concrete with it. I've been seriously looking at several cars to V8 swap. My 01 was almost scrap when I bought it, fuel system was a wreck, plugs and wires were stock at 190K, I bought it for the reasons of it was an Eddie Bauer, I had access to parts cheaply, and the engine looked beautiful through the oil fill. To date, it's had a new cat, fuel pump, filter, plugs, wires, wheel bearing, CV axle, some paint touch up on the bumper I want to replace, and a tire. It was an $1100 car, and a SOHC, but I've come to like it a lot, plus about everybody think it's the cleanest 2nd Gen in the area. Had it pretty well sorted about a thousand miles now, up to 191.5K, been enjoying it without constant work. I don't worry about the engine and transmission much, there's so many being junked if I needed either that I'd just get them and either pay for the trans to be put in, or do the engine myself.

@Bfausett84
You are aware, but maybe not, that Jeep branded vehicles have for years had one of the highest warranty-claim rates in the industry? Maybe it's because of the way they're used.....

My eldest daughter's was first car was a '89 Wrangler. Biggest piece of crap I ever bought (with the possible exception of my '01 ST... LOL) I could barely keep it on the road. I'll never buy another Jeep.
