Looking at buying a Explorer with a bad timing chain in the rear. Pricing out different engines, and needed to know if there are any differences between 98 SOHC and 2000 SOHC's.

I've found some lower mile engines at a decent price, but the explorer is a 98 and the engines are mostly 2000 era. Will they work?

Iat/maf & vis

My 2000 SOHC has an integrated IAT and MAF sensor. I believe the 1998 SOHC has a 4 wire connector to the MAF sensor and a separate IAT in a different location on the main intake tube.

Also, there are minor differences in the variable induction system. I believe the 2001 and later SportTrack SOHC has a different throttle body.

I believe there are significant intake manifold differences in the 2002 and later SOHC engines.

I would not buy any engine later than a 2000 to minimize differences.
