SOHC intake manifold gasket replacement questions

Greetings all.
My "bro in law- sis in law" just acquired a 2001 Mounty with sohc.

It is throwing P0174-P0171 codes so we are going to replace the intake gaskets.

Having absolutely no experience with this, I would like to know things to look out for-extra parts we should have on hand etc. Since they will be bringing the truck here, it would be nice to have everything needed without making unnecessary 45 minute excursions to the parts place.



Will this release coolant? Should we have new coolant on hand?

Egr pipe? What to do about that? Gaskets?
How long should the repair take? Will a weekend do?


Any tips will be appreciated. Lots of tubes in there!

i haven't done myself this job, but i've read up on it. others have reported it should take 2-2.5 hours. make sure you change both the upper and lower intake gaskets/o-rings. i think the only other part you're likely to need is the o-ring for the EGR pipe and it wouldn't hurt to an EGR gasket in case you need it. i don't believe you'll need any coolant, but i could be wrong (i'm sure other's will chime in on this job). as i recall removing a bolt on the rear of the manifold is tricky, but other than that the job sounds pretty straight forward. the box the gaskets come in will list every thing it includes. i'll see if i can find a link for this job and post it.

I did find and read this thread earlier, however I assume all fluids were drained prior to the below work.

No coolant is released on the SOHC. Pull the negative cable, MAF plug, IAT plug, breather hose, engine cover, pcv lines, vac lines, throttle cable, vapor management solenoid connectors & vac lines (if applicable),TPS connector, IAC connector, brake booster line, and the main PCM connector. Also you may have a section of conduit there covering the main PCM harness. Remove the nut securing this to the firewall, carefully because on some models the PCM ground strap is held on by the conduit mounting stud. This is so you can flex the harness to access the rear torx screws. I always just lube the EGR o ring, but it's easy to replace if you wish. Watch the IAC pipe and fitting, don't want to mess those up...I always lube all hoses with a dab of petroleum jelly, and all electrical connectors get some dielectric. Watch the PCV lines, some have clothespins on the intake side. Have some rags to plug the intake ports, it's easy to drop a screw in there. Have an inch pounds torque wrench, and a shop vac with crevice tool to clean the valley area. Around here it is a common mouse hangout, and can be full of contamination nests, nuts, etc. I would say with air you should be done in three hours if it's your first set. Keep in mind, I have never done an '01, so there will be some differences. Best wishes Jon.
