Why do you think there are so few performance parts available for the 4.0SOHC engine?

And what might that reason be?

cause nobody wants to, or its to hard, just a guess. if you see a lot of these performance parts there on fairly seasoned engines. the SOHC is only 4 yr old, the V-8 is like 7, an the OHV is 12 (or somethin like that) there is another thread about the new Volant intake for the SOHC, $300, do a search.

Actually, the 302 (5.0 V8) has been around for a very long time, most notably in fox-body mustangs. The 4.0 OHV Köln engine is a derivative of the 2.9 V6, which has also been around for a while.

This is why you see bunches of parts for the V8, it's a Mustang engine.

The 302 came from the 289 way back in the 60's. It has a long track record.

well there was a 4.9 but i was just messing with him because it never came in any ranger or explorer. the old inline 6 was a 300 4.9 motor that made a ton of torque.

i agree. i think the SOHC is just too new still. another thing to consider, is that maybe the aftermarket for that engine is not that big. even though its been around for 4 years, it was only one of three engine options on explorers (im not sure about rangers), and who knows what the ratio of SOHCs to OHVs & 5.0s is? heh.

i'm sure since all the 2002+ explorers gonna have the SOHC engine (6 or 8), there'll be lots of parts out in at least a year or two. And also I've read that the 2002 SOHC V8 engine bay fits the Cobras DOHC V8 in it perfectly (source: motortrend.com) Hmm....!

the cobra motor is even bigger then the sohc motor it may not fit although the tremor which was there test bed for the 2002 trucks back in 96 had a dohc 4.6 so you never know.

speaking of the tremor...that thing defined badass :) too bad they never made em.

I think now that the Ranger is getting the SOHC we will see more parts come out for it. I mean most of the time, when you mention trying to make an Explorer go faster or handle better, on-road or off, even fellow car guys kinda look at you like you have a third eye. However, the Ranger is relatively popular as a sport truck, so I bet companies will start developing applications for the 4.0 soon.

Oh, and on a side note, the 302/5.0 Windsor engine family has been around for almost 40(!) years. Anybody remember the 221, waaaaaay back in 1962? Or how about the 260? I've never actually seen one of either, since I was born 20 years after the 221 went into production, but I do know my Ford history! :D

i am a 4.6 guy and could set some one up right away if they had the new 4.6 explorer. all so my brother loved the Tremor and once he realized he could not buy one because it would not be produced he start making his truck go fast and fast now i guess his truck would beat a tremor but dam that was a nice truck.

4.0 SOHC

From what I was told it does not matter as it is going away! They where going to put it in the mustang as the for the 6 replacement but they changed thier minds.

I agree, you gotta face it. There are more and more of us that want to fix up our X's. But the X is the number one selling SUV for what 11 years? That is alot of X's most of which are owned by folks that never even change their own oil. The aftermarket just doesn't have the interest, YET. The X's are getting cheaper and cheaper. More and more people are going to start buying and fixing X's up. We just have to be patient, and weed out the soccer moms.
