My 97 XLT w/SOHC has been squealing at startup since it has gooten cold here in Metro Washington DC. I replaced the belt last Sept and it looked great so maybe after 96,000+miles the tensioner was not up to par ;)

Picked up a tensioner AND a idler pulley at the local NAPA. If you have never replaced the belt, you really need a piece of pipe that fits over your 5/8th socket so you can relieve the spring of the tensioner while removing the belt.

Boths parts total under $60 and about 15 minutes of time and your done.

You know, the great thing about this site is if I procrastinate long enough someone will figure out how to fix a problem I'm having. I was about to do a search for this same thing. Like yours, mine started squealing when it got cold and the humidity went way up.

Thanks for posting the fix.
