96 awd limited
Hey

I was looking for a little help.
I have a 96 limited 5.0 awd. it has a 3"BL, AAL, and 1.5"TT with 33's
I went out 4x4ing the first time with this vehicle. IT was rather muddy and when trying to do a little flexing driving up a dirt mound. MY left rear tire (inside tire) was the only tire that would spin the front tires were not moving at all. Which leads me othink my awd is not workin but in just some mud if I stomp on it it leaves a mark that looks like the awd is working.
After I came home and washed the truck and noticed my right cv boot was off and I think I hada rock in the brake a it was squeling. That has stopped, but now there is a whirring sound. The sound is related to the rpm's for sure. The only thing that I can say it sounds like the power steering on an older ford. The sound seems to be coming from the center lower art of the engine.
Its there inany gear and neutral and the sound speeds up with rpms. I stuck my head under the truck when it was running as I thought that it may be from the front diff, however it sounds like it coming from the fan area or just above the front cross member.

sorry for the long post but basically.
what should I check for the function and repair of my awd
where coud the whirring be coming from. I am good a repairing but the diagnostic is a little harder for me. Any help woud be appreciated.

okay so an udate. I just remove the front driveshaft and the noise is still there. It is not speed relatd but rather rpm related.
When I removd the front driveshaft the x would not move in any gear or reverse. Looked under the truck the rear driveshaft was not turning but the front output on the transfer case was. When putting it back into park it would grind. (just like if you were slowly driving and suddenly put it into park.

So obviously something is wrong with my transfer case. But the whinning seems to be comming from farther forward than the transfer case. Possibly tranmission?
oh and put the front driveshaft back in and it drives again

any help would be really appreciated. I'm gunna takit to a shop to get diagnosd but woudl still like furter input as I am a stunent with limited funds and wouldperfer to fix it myself

put it up on stilts, with all tires off the ground and put it in drive. see hat happens

Does it make the sound in park? If it does then its not a transmission or transfer case issue.

Try taking off the belt to eliminate any belt issues. Thats what it sounds like to me.

I think both driveshafts need to be on to drive, even if the transfer case is fine.

Yeah it makes the sound in park. I thought that the truck would still drive with the front out. acually I remember reading about aguy on here that has done it Cant remember his name but his avatar is a lifted green x with primered front fenders I think.

Still that doesnt answer my question of why the x only seemd to have 1 wheel drive when I was flexing it, but awd at other times.

I willtry removing the belts to eliminate that. I do not think it is a bel but may be a bearing or something on one of the accesories.

mods could you move this to the engine and driveline section

i drove for a long time with one driveshaft. have you checked into your wheel bearings? i might be a lil off but its worth checkin. good luck, i will check up on this thread, as i get more ideas i will share... later man

how do I check my wheel bearings? I was wanting to do that. But with my front driveshaft out. My truck should still drive and it doesn. I want to concentrate onthat problem first. Im not to worried abou the whine wrecking something. Its not aa metal on meal sounds and doesntsound destructive so.

Check your belt tensioner. The bearings are known to go bad( Mine came apart ). Also. AWD doesnt mean 4wd. If you are getting in the mud, click down to 4 low.

Yeah it is the belt tensioner bearings I narrowed that down with a peice to tubing and was able to pinpoint the sound. And actually AWD on a 5.0 means AWD there are no buttons to push. its a mechanical transfer case that is awd all the time.

Went out to some mud puddles again today. As I was worried about my rear axle not getting power seen how the truck wouldnt move with the front driveshaft out and all 4 tires spin in the mud. However as soon as there is a good load on the front tires they stop spinning. Going up a big mound of dirt the front tires would turn a lil and stop turn a lil and stop. All the while the rear tires were spinning and smoking. I think its just time for a 4406 TC
