someone boosted my spare

ok, so i am out working on the truck today and i notice something is different...so i start poking around and i notice my spare is gone...and the lowing cable was just cut off. i am in the process of lifting and will be getting bigger tires anyways so i would have need to relocate the spare, but it is just the principle of the thing. at least this will make it easier for the exhaust guy when it comes time for duals.

anyways, i have a power moonroof and no roof rack, so putting a spare up there is out. i thought about the reciever-mounted systems and i dont like how you have to move your liscense plate out and they are just plaing ugly. so, i want to relocate it inside. short of a bunji cord, anybody got any ideas on how to secure it to the cargo area in an upright position, so as not to rub on the plastic? i know some jeeps and blazers have the spare mounted in the cargo areas but i dont know how they secure it. anybody have any ideas or been through this?


and yes, run-flats are sout of the question!

Are you absolutley sure the cable was cut, and not rusted through? Some people on here have had their spare fall off....

You could replace the cable winder, and chain the tire to the frame if you want security.

CRANK, HE IS ALSO GOING BIGGER, AND STOCK SIZE BARELY FITS UP THERE ANYWAYS... I SAW A 35 IN A SPORTS CARGO AREA (TOM RIOS) AND IT ALMOST DIDNT FIT ALTHOUGH IT LAID FLAT... BUT I DONT THINK ITS A FEASIBLE IDEA.....oops sorry bout the caps lock, just realized it, and too lazy to retype everything.... anyways.... look into a bumper mounted swing away type..... the way jeeps do it, its they have a cover for it, and have a bolt mounted to the side of the bedsides... and a disc with a wingnut on it... its ugly, and kills cargo space.....

Heh, funny you said that, I also noticed when I was putting on my body lift, that my spare tire, had been jacked, the cable wasn't rusted, it was cut clean. I was a bit bummed out, but then I just kinda had to laugh about it, I've got 35's on there now anyway, wouldn't of done me anygood. I've got my spare currently laying in the back, had to take out my system for it, but until I get my rear bumper with tire carrier it'll sit in the back, and make the whole inside smell like a new tire.....

Ok, How can someone cut it when there is a tire on it?

The tire rubs the floorboard and the lug holes are too small for a cutter, unless it was loose there usually is no slack to cut.

my suggestion would be to get a good lock to put through the bolt holes and make sure your spare is not that great just got air in it that way if they pinch it again they will stuff the wheel trying to get the lock off.

i doubt it was rusted through, besides it looks cut. i have no idea how someone could get up there though. i looked into recoever-mounted systems but dont like them.. ..i like the styly where it is mounted on to the back, but usually it is mounted to the body and i dont want to do that. anybody seen one that mountes to the bumper of an ex?

The only way I could see someone removing a underside spare tire would be with a hand grinder since the only part of the steel cable that is below the rim has a crimped steel fitting on it.

I do have a rusted underside mounted spare tire that a friend found on the highway. The center mount is rusted to the rim and it had 6 inches of rusted cable. How far was your cable hanging down?

I sure wouldn't want to hit a mounted spare laying on the road during a dark night when riding a motorcycle!

I was recently getting a new spare (a 31") to match the others on the X and the tire dealer said I was lucky the damn thing hadn't fallen off and hurt someone... the cable was frayed in a major way!
I'm not sure how yours is, but it's probably worth a check if you have an older vehicle and haven't gone under there to check the integrity of the wire/tire.

I secured mine nicely with those ratchet straps since it wouldn't fit underneath and I have kayak racks up top and didn't want to put it there ... holds tight. I think they were ~$14 at PepBoys.

thats a good idea. i have a 12" sub in back plus 2 toolboxes so i will have to stand mine upright. since i have the factory tint plus 7% limo tint, i tested putting one in there and you cant see it from the outside, so i might as well. i just have to come up with a mounting system. i will probably make a wood platform to extend the wheelwell and put it on there then strap it up.

about a month ago, i swapped in the spare and drov on it to make sure it was holding air (i do this every few months). there was minimal rust on the bracket and none on the cable. i am thinking maybe someone was able to get a screwdriver into the crank and lower it just enough to cut it because it was taught bit there is a few inches of slack cable hanging now.

luckily, we have 2 exs and the other one, we have 4(mounted)+spare+3 other spares (she bent a rim and rather than replace the rim, we were able to get a whole setof fact. rims/tires for 100 bucks, so we kee the extra as spares.) that wil just mean that if i blow a tire, i'll ride on 3 30x9.5s and one 235/75. hey, its better than being stuck there!

this does solve my exhaust problem though...only one shop would run duals out the back for me since there is almost no space to run the left pipe, it would be a tight fit...now they have all the room they need!

well, i dont have my body lift on, but it should be fairly simple...just like stock, pop the crank in the hole.and turn. the only thing i could think of is that maybe the hole doesnt line up now. does it still line up, or is it just hard to turn?

no it doesnt line up now. it seems the only way to do it is to reach in over the frame. but i can hardly see it let alone get the crank in there plus i think the crank is to long to do it that way.
