Im sick of all these kids rolling around in these little ricers, that are all done up and looking at my explorer and they have to be thinking..stock...he used to have all phat cars,,cause I have had everything from camaros to hopped up hondas, to big ass 4 wheel drives..and now im rolling around a 98 black explorer with nothing but a small system, a tv with a playstation and tinted windows..so I need to do something seriously..I live in the city, but I have a place in the country that is all gravel roads, and you got to pass a real small creek, so I was thinking lift it a little bit, so I can have some fun in the mud, but like I said I live in the city, so Im rarely in the counrty, but there enough, I was thinking lower it alittle bit, and put some corba r's or some torque thrust IIs on it, and make it a cruiser..and another thing is I tow a pertty heavy boat, so I think if I lowered it I would have to install a air bag helper in the rear to help with towing...any thoughts, I know you guys like to lift your explorers, but all your oponions will be helpfull..thanks

If it was mine, I'd doo exactly what it says in your signature "soon to be lifted on 31's"

I agree, throw on a superlift 4" and some 33"s. That would look really nice. And since you have the V8 it would be that much better. But it could go either way, lowering it with some R's would look good to. My choice would be to lift.

Why not lift it and put the Cobra R's on it with some bigger tires. Sort of like trkmajic did with his Sport Trac (may it RIP). I thought the big tires on the sport wheels looked really nice. Just my opinion.

I agree with everyone. Lift it and put either 31" or 33".:D

Well, according to you name you like the street X. I say lower it with Cobra R's. Do some work to the engine and you will have one bad rice killer. Mine is lowered 2" with cobra's.

I say do a slight lift, like 1-2" shackles and TT the front and go with Cobra-R rims and something around a 31" tire, even lowering the front about a inch and going with 31" would be pretty cool, in this pic is my truck and Spas's, its sitting on 17x8 rims with 285/60/17 street tires, the Gen 1 X in the pic is sitting with 4-5" of lift and 33x12.50x15 and doesnt have a motor in it :)

I agree!! LIFT IT!

The lift with the new wheels and tires is going to cost about the same, as putting the explorer express lowering kit and wheels, so thats another thing thats giving me a hard time to decide. It would look really good with some 18 inch torque thrust IIs, but it would also look really good with baja wheels and 31s...tough decision on my part.

Who needs the explorer express lowering kit? Just go to Autozone and pick up some blocks for $20. Thats all you need. The EE kit is just blocks and a really expensive set of directions.

but, the EE kit comes with camber bushings, and alot better blocks then the autozone kit, I had a set of autozone blocks on my lowrider mazda and they cracked in half..

AIM sells extruded aluminum lowering blocks that are much better than what you would buy at autozone and they don't cost much more.

look in Truckin' magazine for their multipage ad. it shows pics (of stress tests) and gives a detailed explanation of their "superiority" over "other" blocks.

you can find them online (with a much simpler explanation) here:
AIM: just blocks

any alignment shop should be able to get and install the camber bushings for you when you get your ex realigned after lowering.

actually, you could probably get the blocks from AIM, camber bushings installed, and an alignment for around the same price as just buying the ee "kit".

as for towing, try searching. i'm pretty sure i've seen threads about towing w/ lowered explorers on here before.

Go high man. LIFT IT!!!!!!!!!

FORGET THE LIFT!!!! Go lowered man, we need more sport trucks, these guys got enough 4x4s on the site.

Choices... choices...

Sounds like you are running into the same problem I ran into. So, I did both. I had it stock for a year, then began to lift it. Safari racks, hellas, add-a-leafs, bushings, TT, Shackles... yada yada yada. After a few months of off roading, I decided that I wanted to keep her in one piece so I turned it into a sport truck. The way my truck is now, I can not only beat the ricers from stoplight to stoplight, but if the mood catches me right, I can just drive over them. 3" of lift and 32.5" tires. Just check my sig out or my posted pics. Good luck and make sure you take tons of pictures!

lowdpypes, i never knew you kept your 3 inch lift on, I just thought it looks weird from ytour avartar.... Are you going to lower it and get smaller tires? or do you enjoy the extra 3 inches? Have you been to the track yet with the nos and supercharger?

Superlift...

If I could go higher for a reasonable price, I would. I like the height. If I were going to lower it, I would trade it in for a mustang or something. I bought those wheels and tires for the lifted setup. That was the largest I could get under there without having to trim too much of the running boards. I have been to the track once but did not run NOS. It ran 1/4 in the upper 13's which is what I was hoping for. The AWD hooks up great but I am not sure that the transfer case enjoys the stress. No problems so far.
