I was thinking about fitting a full size spare tire, instead of just having the spacesaver. I currently have 265/75 r16s. I was wondering what is the size of the rim underneath the truck, the spacesaver rim with the 225/70 r15 tire mounted to it? I assume it is a 15 inch rim?

My 235/75-15 spare has a 15x6.5" standard steely rim. so I imagine you could go that route, just find you a tire that roughly matches the overall diameter of the 16s in a 15.

You do have a 15" rim. I don't think 16" wheels/tires fit very well under the truck.

So i could get say a 265/70/R 15 tire and mount it onto the 15 inch steel spacesaver rim, this would be close to the 265/75 R 16 tires on vehicle. I assume if i did this i would have to put it in the back of the vehicle, as it would not fit underneath? Then if i ever get a flat it would be kinder to the transfer case, instead of running one tire with 225 and the rest with 265.

Is a 265/75/R 15 the same size as a 265/75 R 16, just the rim it can fit onto is larger?

265/75/15 is not the same as a 265/75/16, it is exactly 1 inch smaller than the 16". Your other choice would be to find a 31-10.50-15, roughly the same size as a 265/75/15, but can usually be found cheaper.

I assume i can't put a 265/75/r16 tire on the 15 inch steel rim? It seems like the best thing would be to get a another 16 inch rim and mount a spare tire on that.

My explorer came with 16" wheels and the spare tire wheel is also a 16". Came stock with a 255/70R16 on it. (The 255/70R16 barely fits with my hidden hitch. Keep in mind I also have a sport, so my stock spare actually hits the rear swaybar and the hitch if the tire is slightly angled...)

Mine came stock with 255/70/R16s on 16 inch rims, but the sparesaver is only a 225/70/R15 on a 15 inch rim.

Why would they change the rim size between the tires and the spare?

Thanks chris for the info on that, it seems quite an easy mod to do, just have to hope that the wire will withstand the extra load.

Out of couriosity, is yours a 2wd?

No it is a 4WD model (UK spec). The spare does say, temporary use only (max 50 mph). So i don't think they intend for you to drive it for a month before getting a replacement for the stock tire.

Its still has the lines on the tire and various stickers all round it, so i don't think it has ever been used since new.

In UK, it's a bit far.

I had a 235/70R15 or 235/75R15 spare on a steel rim under my '99 XLT. Full size, Michelin something or other - not a temporary deal.

I'd love to know how someone got a 32" to fit under there.

I'm currently running 31x10.5x15 MT's on my truck, and when I was doing the rear brakes, I decided to dink around and see if I could fit one of my 31's under there, but even as worn as my tires are, there's no way it was fitting under there - I actually got it slightly stuck, trying to wedge it in there, and had to reef on it to get it out.

ETA: Ah, I see from the link someone had to do some chopping to get a 33" in there.

I'll put my spare on the roof when I go to 33" tires (SOON!)
