Spare tire stolen...part needed!

The local dealership is closed and motorcraft.com doesn't list anything for this.

I just bought our X and the guy said it didn't have a spare so he ordered a replacement one. Well, while replacing the shocks I noticed that they must have had the spare stolen off the lot or something because the wire holding the spare "mount" was cut and hanging there.

Does anyone have any idea other than calling the dealership where I can get such a part? I guess a local salvage yard might have it, and probably much cheaper than the dealership.

Anyone have any other ideas? Right now the spare is sitting in the back, but I would like it back where it belongs.

Is the cable rusty? Maybe it broke off. In any case, If you hit up a junkyard, get the best looking cable you can....and try the mechanism first.

no cable looks good, it definitely looks like it was cut.

Will I need the full assembly or just the cable and tire mount?

See how much cable is left in the mechanism. Typically there is more than enough in there to still be useable. Then get a scrap peice of metal to make a rectangular plate that will hold the spare up. 2 holes in the plate and a good cable clamp and you will be good to go.

I did this well over a year ago and am still holding my tire up under there without any problems.

At my old work I was rear ended in a '03 Ranger. The car went under the bed and ripped the spare off. Total damage was a bent rear buper and a snaped cable. The car was not so lucky
