I have a 1996 XLT Explorer and am wondering which plug corresponds to the #5 cylinder?

You haven't said what type of engine you have. Anyhow:
4.0L V6 pushrod and SOHC: (front to rear), Left (driver) side 4-5-6. Right 1-2-3.
5.0L V8:Left (driver)side 5-6-7-8. Right 1-2-3-4.
