'05 Explorer XLT 4.0L
I just traded my 96 X (XLT) for and 05 X (XLT). What can I say, I love Explorers.

Since its a new vehicle to me (I've noticed a lot of changes between the two) I don't know much about the audio system in it. I have the base model sound package.

So here's my questions:

1. Will 5x7's fit all 4(???) speaker slots? Or can I go bigger w/o modification.

2. How can I implement a sub w/o losing the thirdrow seat? I have not seen or heard of any stealthbox types of implementation.

If anyone could shed some light on these questions it would be great.

check out the audio section, there is a thread about the third row seat. I am trying myself to figure out exactly how to work around this third row seat/sub issue. As far as speakers go 5x7 will work, I have seen some websites saying 6x8 will work but really no difference. I would suggest components if your planning to upgrade.

For Speakers, 5x7, when I had it apart, didn't thing 6x8 would fit.
Looking for a Sub too. Best I can come up with is to go Factory. This will bolt in if your replace the trim panel and add a subwoofer enclosure, and Sub Amp. The advantage to this no fab, plugs into the body harness although you may/maynot have the wire that goes from the body harness to the radio, like 3 foot length that has is own part number. I also have the third row and I do want to keep it. Other idea is crutchfield sells a small stand alone sub unit that would fit under a seat. If there is a better idea, i'll look into that too.

What exactly are component speakers, are they just regular speakers that separate the cone and the tweeter into separate "components"?

Do they need an external amp or will they run fine off of the factory hu?

Correct, components will come with the speaker and tweeter as seperate units, a much better combination. I went with 6 1/2" (yes, the round ones) speakers for my component set, but had to make a custom enclosure ring to seal it from the front and back of the door. & yes, they will run off the factory HU, but I recommend an amp, they will sound that much better. As for what will fit, depends on what it is. Check the dimensions online, then compare them with what you have to work with. I think one other thing to be careful of was I only had 2 1/2" of depth from the door back to the window track, so had to space the speaker out quite a bit. As for the question of subs with the 3rd row seat, my best solution for myself to date was I made a custom box so they sat all the way in the back. Basically I put the 3rd row seat up and worked with the dimensions that I had left behind it, made a box. Not the greatest solution for when I want to put the seat down and throw some stuff in the back, but good for now. For those that have an '02+ explorer and do not have the rear air option, you can always go with a stealthbox by JL Audio. I would have liked to go this route, but I do have rear air. http://mobile.jlaudio.com/products_stealthbox_detail.php?fit_id=1381

6x8 and 5x7 are the same size speakers with different screw mounting locations.

yeah and there is no point in goign bigger if your gonna get a sub. iv heard there is less distortion with smaller or round speakers.
