Specific sct X3 tunes - what have you got?

so for the boys that already have the tuner... maybe you can help out us new comers...

how does james's tuning process work ? i know he emails you the tunes, but does he check your X's personal diagnostic's then make a tune ? or just write a prefab tune then adjust accordingly ?

I plugged in the tuner to the obd ll, then sent my vin, comm (dont know what that is) it said can, and a strategy code. As well as any mods, device serial no. and what octane tunes I want. So far so good, except I took off the panel under my steering wheel before I found the obd port and realized I didnt have to. Can anyone say F*****' turnip! allright allright quiet down everyone.

I just gave him the mods I did and he built the tune from that. I am pretty sure he's done enough dyno tunes with the various combination of mods on our trucks to get it very close. What you could do is wait to get your tuner then do a datalog and have him change your tunes accordingly...but with the mild sort of engine mods that we all do here I am not sure it would make a huge difference....might be worth a try though!

i didnt know it was that easy, i thought maybe you had to data log your driving, then send him that info. then he sends you the tunes you want...

also cant wait to get the transmission straight. it doesnt bother me to much, but it will be nice once i get the tunes running, and the trans wont be hunting gears as often. also i want get the shifts a little bit firmer, but not like harsh racing shifts. i just want to feel confident when i romp the throttle, and travel the gears that my shifts are solid.

so excited :D

How would you say the torque tune changes the characteristcs of your truck James?

With the 89 torque tune I have been running, off the line power is much better. With my driving style I rarely go over 3000 RPMs, but I notice a pretty significant difference in that range from the stock tune. As I understand it the torque tune maximizes power in the RPM range I drive at...and based on the what I have seen, it works as advertised.

On the highway in OD my truck still has to downshift sometimes on steep inclines but it seems to stay in OD unless it is really struggling or I give it more gas. I think that's more of a gearing (differential) issue since I have 3.55s and larger tires.

I didn't notice any changes in the way the truck shifts as far as shift points/firmness, but I'm pretty happy with how it is shifting now anyway so that's not an issue. I might talk to Mr. Henson and see what he recommends on the shift pressure adjustments.

I haven't tried the 92 octane torque tune yet but I expect it would give me a little more power in the same RPM range that I mentioned before.

Hope that helps

Sure does. I rarely pull more than 3k unless I'm overtaking on the highway. That sounds like an ideal tune. Thanks mate.

but doesnt the tq tune not leave you with much on the top end ?

i know its not a major thing to have power really above 4000K for our X's, but me personally i would like to have some reserve power in the top end, if im pissed off  lol when passing someone on the highway hahahaha :D

does this make sense ^ ?

Oh s*** I didnt think about that, aah thats right the only hwy driving I do is trips to pick up my Son then I'll just load the street tune (I think):D

I wouldn't say it decreased the top end on my truck. The few times I've nailed it it had plenty of power. It just has more timing/fuel down low and therefore more power at the lower end. Top end is more like stock, which didn't seem bad to me. I have no problem passing anyone I need to on the highway.

You could always have James put a street or performance tune on there and you could run that one when you are highway driving....or just tell him what you are looking for and he'll tweak it if he doesn't have one like that already.

i sent james an email just saying i want 87/89/93 street tunes, as i mainly just want my A/F ratio corrected for some better mpg/ a few more horse's.

* spoke with James on the phone tonight, and my order is being processed !

Ronin, have you run any other tunes besides " tq " tunes ? how do they compare ?

Haven't run a street tune as all I have are torque tunes for different octanes of gas. I am guessing here but I would think the difference is the street tunes bring the timing and fuel in a bit later to bump that power up a bit higher in the RPM range. Shift points might be changed a bit too.

i know this beating a dead horse ?

mpg affects ?

11 mpg is killing me, id be happy to see 12 lol...

my hwy mpg ( 18-20 ) is good, but local city is horrific...

No significant change that I could see, but I had stopped detailed tracking of mileage by the time I did the tuner...part of easing the pain of getting worse mileage with the tire size increase lol!

Hard to get around the bad mileage around town with 3.55 gears. I think 4.10's would help a lot in that department.

im running stock tires, but i think 4:10's might be extreme lol...

i would love to get the 3.73 gears in my X if that was possibe...

Well that's not too tough. Just get a set of 3.73 diffs from a low mileage wrecked truck like I did. If you're not 4WD then it would be even cheaper since you'd only have to buy 1 diff. Then use your new tuner to tell the computer that the gears have changed so your shifting and speedometer go back to normal.

I haven't swapped them in yet but will probably do it later in the winter or spring.

Just thought I'd touch base as my internet is a dodgy peice of s*** at the moment. My x's strategy platform isnt supported cause she's an aussie import but James is fixing it up now for me. Its great to deal with a real proffesional. Im getting there...

YEEE HAAA, got my tunes today!!!! I have 91 oct street, 91 oct tow and 95 oct tow. So far I've only tried the 91 street f*****' awesome straight from James with no adjustments. 0-70mph pretty quick (5-6 sec, just a guess), sounds heaps better and less drone from the exhaust, no lag when you put your foot down she drops back a cog instantly, seems to sit a few hundred revs higher at cruising speed(my old girl does that in cruise control 200 rpm over what my foot would have it at the same speed). That maybe a consideration for you Danny, mpg may decrease slightly with the street tune. Overall very impressive. Its been a bit of an up and down ride over the last few months, airbox mod- more power and response, exhaust more power and response, same for adding the k&n, then got the new boots and we went backwards a little bit. Now, with James help, F*****' bang on, well happy. This is only the first I've tried, can't wait to try the rest.

Have a good one.

Can't give enough praise to James Henson at Henson performance, the bloke went above and beyond to help out with a strategy platform that worked on my x. Excellent customer service!:thumbsup::thumbsup:

im anxiously waiting for the package to get to my door, but while i wait...

the other day i figured i'd just try something different, and i filled up my tank with ( 92 Octane - premium @ the station i happen to stop ) last thursday. the total price difference to fill my tank between regular / premium was only 5$ so i figured what the hell...

so far one major thing ive noticed with running premium fuel is that my idle is much smoother, which is already worth it to me. I wanna say that the X feels as if it pulls a little bit harder, but dont wanna buy into the fact that i put in different gas, and i got 20hp lol. overall my X does seem to be running smoother with the premium vs. the regular...

now makes me want to once again think even more about what tunes i want...
