Ok,
My speed sensor has been playing up for a while.
My speed gauge is now not working at all. This makes the car almost un-usable as it does not know when to change up and down the gears.

Can someone please post me the Ford part number for the speed sensor i need for my 1997 4X4 SOHC explorer

Thanks
Tom

Just replaced mine on a 97 Sport last week. It was a F85Z-2L373-AC or BRAB-130 Motorcraft Part No.

will that work on a 97 4x4 then?

Tom you talking about the VSS? If so, there are two a front one & a rear one. From what I recall the front one is ~$150 and the rear is around ~$30

Tom:

Should be the same as my Sport is a 4x4 as well. I believe the rear is the one that controls the speedo. FYI, both Autozone and the Dealer gave me the wrong part the first time, so I wonder if 97 was the year they switched the VSS. The wrong one they tried to give me was a larger unit that had small cable at the end of it. Mine was actually just an electronic sensor with no cable. It's mounted on the top of the rear differential and held in by a single 13mm bolt. You may want to remove it and take it with to ensure you get the right part. It was about a $25 part at both Autozone and the dealer.

They still use the VSS on mine.... Howerver the way i understand this is 98 + they take a speed reading from the ABS sensor....
(Don't trust me on that but its what ive heard)

That also just made me think?
Is the sensor on the top of the diff not the ABS sensor? this truck has 3abs right, 2 sensors on the front and one on the back of the diff?

I always thought the VSS was somewhere around the back of the T-Case.

the VSS is on the back of the T case for an AWD or 4x4.
The stator and sensor in the rear diff is for the ABS, on the 97.

I take back my previous post. The sensor on the top of the differential is the ABS sensor and the one by the transfer case is the speed sensor. Sorry for the confusion.
